#29 Bears Edge Winthrop, 4-3, and Wake Forest, 4-3

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Playing outside of the first time since the fall, the 29th-ranked Brown women's tennis team (11-3) edged both Winthrop (5-9) and Wake Forest (1-8) by identical 4-3 scores in a pair of matches hosted by Wake Forest on Saturday and Sunday. Against the Demon Deacons, Brown battled back from a 2-0 deficit with sophomore Jessica Harrow's (La Crescenta, CA) straight-set win at #2 singles clinching the victory.

On Saturday against the Eagles, Brown won a close doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. After the two teams split 8-4 decisions at #1 and #3, with the Brown team of senior Cassandra Herzberg (Miami Beach, FL) and freshman Sarah Kandath (Gansevoort, NY) winning at #3, the point came down to the #2 position, where junior Misia Krasowski (Deerfield, IL) and sophomore Ariel Caldwell (Atlanta, GA) won, 9-8.

Winthrop battled back by winning at #1 singles, but the Bears claimed three of the next four matches off the courts, all in straight sets, to clinch the match with a 4-2 lead. Herzberg won, 6-0, 6-1 at #2, senior Julie Flanzer (Highland Park, IL) won, 6-3, 6-4, at #5, and freshman Laura Wiley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) won, 6-1, 6-0, at #6. Winthrop claimed a three-set victory at #3 singles to account for the 4-3 final.

On Sunday, against Wake Forest, Brown fell behind, 1-0, after dropping all three doubles matches to the Demon Deacons. The hosts quickly went up, 2-0, with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #1 singles, but wins by Wiley at #5 (6-0, 6-2) and freshman Nikia Uberoi (Boca Raton, FL) at #6 (6-1, 6-0) tied the score at 2-2. Flanzer won her 13th singles match of the dual season, 6-2, 6-3, at #4 singles to give Brown a temporary, 3-2, lead. However, Wake Forest knotted the score at 3-3 with a straight-set win at #3, setting up Harrow's clinching point.

After winning her first set, 6-4, Harrow fell behind, 2-1, early in the second set with the match tied 3-3. However, she won four straight games to take a 5-2 lead. Her opponent closed the score to within 5-3, but Harrow won the final game to clinch the victory for the Bears.

Brown continues action on Friday, March 16th, when it hosts Stony Brook in a 5:00 p.m. match.
