#51 Bears Defeat #34 Virginia Commonwealth, 4-1, in First Round of ITA Kick-Off Weekend

DURHAM, NC – The Brown women's tennis team (2-0), ranked #51 in the current poll, earned a 4-1 victory over previously undefeated and #34 Virginia Commonwealth (4-1) in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, hosted by #8 North Carolina. Brown will play the winner of the UNC-Marshall match tomorrow, Sunday, January 29th.

The event, which features 60 teams nationally at 15 different sites, will determine this year's qualifiers for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships to be held Feb. 10-13 in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Brown opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins at #1 and #2. Junior Misia Krasowski (Deerfield, IL) combined with sophomore Ariel Caldwell (Atlanta, GA) to win, 8-2, at the #2 position. VCU tied the doubles score at 1-1 with a win at #3, but senior Cassandra Herzberg (Miami Beach, FL) and sophomore Jessica Harrow (La Crescenta, CA) closed out the point with an 8-4 win at #1 to give the Bears a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Rams tied the score at 1-1 with a straight-set win at #4 singles, but senior Julie Flanzer (Highland Park, IL) quickly put Brown on top, 2-1, with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alena Gerasimova at #5 singles.

After winning the first set in matches at the top three singles positions, VCU would win the second set in all three to force deciding sets. The match at #6 singles was also in a third set after freshman Nikita Uberoi (Boca Raton, FL) forced a third set with a 7-6 win in the second. The Bears put the match away with matching 6-3 wins, first by Herzberg at #2 singles and then by Krasowski at #1 singles to clinch the match. Harrow and Uberoi did not finish their matches once the team result was decided, though both were leading their opponents in the third.

The Bears continue action tomorrow, Sunday, January 29th when they face either #8 UNC or #61 Marshall. If UNC wins its first round match, the Bears will face the host Tar Heels at 1:00 p.m. A Marshall victory would pit the Bears against the Herd at 9:30 a.m.
