Women’s Tennis Defeats Davidson, 6-1; Aboubakare Earns Two Brown Records
PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown women's tennis team (2-4) won its second straight match on Saturday morning in a 6-1 victory over visiting Davidson College. The Bears swept the doubles point, while conceding just five total games, and went on to take five of the six singles matches in straight sets, to post the win. Highlighting the day's action was a record-breaking performance by senior Bianca Aboubakare's (Orange, CA) in both singles and doubles.
Already Brown's career combined wins record holder (157), Aboubakare broke the career singles wins record and tied the career doubles wins record. She combined with freshman Jessica Harrow (Los Angeles, CA) to post an 8-2 win at #1 doubles, which tied her for the career doubles wins record (72) with former teammate Emily Ellis '10. Her 6-4, 6-0 win at #2 singles, which gave Brown a 3-0 lead in the match, was the 85th singles win of her career, as she broke Saranga Sangakkara's '99 record of 84, which had stood for nearly 12 years.
In addition to Brown's 8-2 win at #1 doubles, junior Cassandra Herzberg (Miami Beach, FL) and freshman Ariel Caldwell (Atlanta, GA) combined to post an 8-2 win at #3 doubles. Brown rounded out the sweep with an 8-1 win at #2 by sophomore Misia Krasowski (Deerfield, IL) and junior Carissa Aboubakare (Orange, CA), who was playing in her first match of the season.
Herzberg gave Brown a 2-0 lead in the match with a dominating win at #3 singles (6-0, 6-1), before Aboubakare's record-breaking win at #2 increased the lead to 3-0. Shortly after Aboubakare won her match, Krasowski clinched the victory for Brown with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #1 singles.
After a loss at the #4 position made it 4-1, Harrow made quick work of her opponent at #5 singles, 6-1, 6-2, to give Brown a 5-1 lead. Caldwell, who was tied, 3-3, in her first set, closed out the match by winning nine straight games to earn a 6-3, 6-0 victory at #6.
Brown continues action this weekend when it travels to Princeton to take part in the ECAC Team Tournament. Seeding for the tournament will be announced on Monday.
