PROVIDENCE, RI – The 62nd-ranked Brown women’s tennis team (11-3) earned a 5-2 victory over Buffalo on Sunday afternoon in a match played outside, due to some unseasonably warm weather in Providence over the weekend. Brown claimed the doubles point with wins at #2 and #3 and then went on to win four of the six singles matches for the victory.
Senior Emily Ellis (Fort Worth, TX) and junior Marisa Schonfeld (Washington, DC) opened the doubles matches with an 8-5 win at #3 and then were followed by sophomore Julie Flanzer (Highland Park, IL) and freshman Misia Krasowski (Deerfield, IL) winning 8-4 at #2 to earn the doubles point for Brown.
Sophomore Catherine Stewart (Sewickley, PA) increased Brown’s lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at #5 singles, while Flanzer earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at #4 singles to give the Bears a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore Cassandra Herzberg (Miami Beach, FL) dropped her match at #1 singles, as Buffalo was able to get on the board, but junior Bianca Aboubakare (Orange, CA) closed out her match at #2 singles, 7-6 (9), 6-1, to clinch the victory for Brown.
The two teams split the final two matches on the courts with Schonfeld earned a 6-2, 7-5 win at #6 to account for the final score.
In the midst of a four-match homestand, the Bears will close out the stretch of four straight at home on Tuesday afternoon when they host Stony Brook at 3:30 p.m.
