#54 Bears Defeat Lipscomb, 6-1; Fall to #24 Vanderbilt, 5-2
NASHVILLE, TN - The 54th-ranked Brown women's tennis team (8-3) posted a split on Saturday in a pair of matches played at Vanderbilt's Brownlee O' Currey Jr. Tennis Courts. The Bears cruised to a 6-1 win over Libscomb (4-5) in a neutral-site match Saturday morning, but then fell to #24 Vanderbilt (5-2), 5-2, later that evening.
The Bears played a modified lineup against Lipscomb, sweeping the doubles matches and winning five of six singles matches en route to the win. Brown stormed out in doubles action, as the senior duo of Emily Ellis (Ft. Worth, TX) and Kathrin Sorokko (Douglastown, NY) earned an 8-0 win at #3 doubles to start things off. Juniors Bianca Aboubakare (Orange, CA) and Marisa Schonfeld (Washington, DC), who posted a school-record 19 doubles wins as a pairing in 2008, clinched the point with an 8-1 win at #1. Sophomores Julie Flanzer (Highland Park, IL) and Catherine Stewart (Sewickley, PA) closed out the doubles action with an 8-4 win at #3.
Ellis gave Brown a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #5. Playing in her first match of the spring, sophomore Jennifer Lee (Sudbury, MA) followed with a dominating, 6-0, 6-0 win at #6 to give Brown a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Cassandra Herzberg (Miami Beach, FL) clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at #1 singles, while freshman Misia Krasowski (Deerfield, IL) claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win at #2 to give Brown a 5-0 lead.
The final two matches to finish were Stewart at #3, who was defeated 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (1), and Schonfeld at #4, who won at pro set by the score of 8-4.
In their second match of the day against the Commodores, the Bears saw a reversal of fortunes, as Vanderbilt was able to get off to a 4-0 lead, clinching the match before Brown won a point. Brown played tough in doubles action, despite dropping the point. Vanderbilt went up, 1-0, with a win at #2, but Brown's #3 team of Ellis and Schonfeld narrowly lost their match, 9-7, as the Commodores went ahead, 1-0. Brown's team of Aboubakare and Herzberg closed the doubles action with a 9-8 (5) win at #1.
Vanderbilt went up, 3-0, with wins at #4 and #5, which were followed by a victory at the #1 position to clinch the match. With the match already in hand for the Commodores, Aboubakare and Krasowski recorded wins at #2 and #3 singles to bring the score to 4-2. Vanderbilt closed out the match with a victory at #6.
