Feb. 26, 2005
PRINCETON, NJ - The Brown women's swimming and diving team closed out the season with a third place finish at the 2005 Ivy League Championships. The Bears started the day in fifth place, but after four Bears finished in the top eight in the 200 Fly, Brown rose to third, finishing with 1002.5 points. Harvard won the Championship with 1615 points, followed by Princeton in second with 1389. Yale took fourth with 980, while Penn earned fifth place with 937.5. Columbia (746), Cornell (551), and Dartmouth (542) rounded out the competition.
In the first event, the 1650 Free, freshman Dillon Delaney (West Barnstable, MA) took 8th, with a time of 17:09.73. With this finish, Brown remained in fifth place, just five points behind fourth-place Penn.
A sixth place finish by senior Jessica Brown (Orange, MA) in the 200 Back (2:03.58) brought the Bears to fourth place, six points ahead of fifth-place Penn.
However, despite junior Eileen Robinson's (Harbour Grace, NF) second place finish in the 100 Free (50.68), Penn had more swimmers in the top eight, so they jumped back ahead of Brown, with 25 points more than the Bears.
Freshman Alexandra Wyatt (Ypsilanti, MI) was Brown's top finisher in the 200 Breast, posting a time of 2:22.53, good for 17th, which allowed Penn to gain 59 points on the Bears.
However, the Bears placed four in the top eight in the next event, the 200 Fly, gaining third place for good, and jumping ahead of both Yale and Penn. Sophomore Ashley Wallace (Chatham, NJ) led the way with a second place finish (2:03.01), while sophomore Becky Kowalsky (Ft. Myers, FL) earned third with a time of 2:03.64. Sophomore Meredith Cocco (Lafayette Hill, PA) posted a time of 2:05.37, good for seventh, while junior Bridgette Cahill (Turnersville, NJ) earned eighth place with a time of 2:05.45. This event placed the Bears 19.5 points ahead of fourth-place Yale.
Junior Jessica Larson (Wayland, MA) earned eighth place in the 3-Meter Dive, with a score of 419.75, moving the Bears to 24.5 points ahead of fourth-place Yale.
In the final event of the day, Brown placed fourth in the 400 Free Relay, as the team of Kowalsky, sophomore Emily Brush (Duxbury, MA), Robinson, and junior Elizabeth Wong (Santa Monica, CA) posted a time of 3:27.65.
