CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Brown women's swimming & diving team opened the 2006 Ivy League Championship with two wins in six events, holding onto fifth place with 252 points, three behind fourth-place Yale. Princeton leads the field with 496 points, while Harvard is in second with 394. Penn stands in third with 289.5, and is followed by Yale and Brown. Columbia (222.5), Dartmouth (181), and Cornell (175) round out the eight-team field.
The Bears started the day with a second place finish in the 200 Free Relay, as the team of senior Eileen Robinson (Harbour Grace, NF), senior Elizabeth Wong (Santa Monica, CA), freshman Sarah Goodman (Philadelphia, PA), and sophomore Lauren Zatorski (Winnetka, IL) swam a time of 1:34.49.
Freshman Ainsley McFadgen (Glace Bay, NS) was the top finisher for Brown in the 500 Free, earning 12th with a time of 5:00.75, while junior Emily Brush (Duxbury, MA) led Brown in the 200 IM, taking 19th with a time of 2:09.53.
Robinson was Brown's first winner for the 2006 Championships, edging out a Yale swimmer by .02 in the 50 Free to win that with a time of 23.33. Wong took 10th with a time of 24.28.
Senior Jessica Larson (Wayland, MA) was Brown's second winner, earning a score of 270.65 to take first place in the 1-Meter Dive, 4.95 ahead of the second-place finisher from Harvard. Both Robinson and Larson finish the 2006 season without a loss on the 50 Free for Robinson and the 1-Meter dive for Larson.
Brown finished the day with a sixth place finish in the 400 Medley Relay with the team of Brush, sophomore Aly Wyatt (Ypsilanti, MI), Wong, and junior Becky Kowalsky (Fort Myers, FL) swimming a time of 3:53.09.
The Championship continues tomorrow when prelims beginning at 11:00 and finals starting at 6:00. Friday's events include the 200 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, 1000 Free, 3-Meter Diving, and 800 Free Relay.
