Bears in 5th after First Day of 2007 Ivy Championships

PRINCETON, NJ - After the first day of competition at the 2007 Ivy League Swimming & Diving Championships, the Brown women's swimming & diving team is in fifth place with 246 points. Princeton leads the field with 497 points, while Harvard is in second with 358 points. Yale stands in third with 356.50 points and Penn is in fourth with 284 points. Dartmouth (198.50), Columbia (180), and Cornell (112) round out the field.

In the first event of the day, Brown's 200 free relay team of senior Meredith Cocco (Lafayette Hill, PA), sophomore Sarah Goodman (Philadelphia, PA), senior Kathleyn Brandstetter (Riverside, CT), and junior Lauren Zatorski (Winnetka, IL) finished in seventh with a time of 1:36.22.

Sophomore Ainsley McFadgen (Glace Bay, NS) took 13th in the 500 free with a time of 4:58.05 as the Bears remained in seventh place, while junior Ally Wyatt (Ypsilanti, MI) was 13th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.42 as Brown moved into sixth place in the team standings.

Brandstetter took 11th in the 50 free with a time of 24.16, while Goodman was 16th with a time of 24.44 as Brown fell back to seventh in the standings.

The Bears put together three strong performances in the 1-meter dive to move into fifth place in the standings. Senior Dana Meadow (Chicago, IL) placed sixth with a score of 250.65, while freshman Katie Olko (Harrison, NY) was seventh with a score of 227.25. Senior Amy Latinen (Fenton, MI) also placed in the top eight with a score of 223.50, good for eighth.

Brown took 6th in the final event of the day, the 400 medley relay, with the team of senior Emily Brush (Duxbury, MA), Wyatt, senior Ashley Wallace (Chatham, NJ), and senior Becky Kowalsky (Fort Myers, FL) swimming a time of 3:53.60.

The Bears resume action at the Championships tomorrow morning with the prelims slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. and the finals at 6:00 p.m. Day two events include the 200 medley relay, the 400 IM, the 100 fly, the 200 free, the 100 breast, the 100 back, and the 1000 free. The prelims for the 3-meter dive will also take place.
