PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – Each year, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) ranks the academic performance of the nation's collegiate swimming and diving teams, presenting Scholar All-America awards to the sport's top performers. Brown swimmers continued to excel in the classroom as well is in the pool during the 2012-2013 season, and both the men's team and the women's team earned a selection as a CSCAA NCAA Division I Scholar All-America Team.
The Team Scholar All-American awards are presented twice annually to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The first set of awards is presented in the fall semester/term and the second set is presented in the semester/term of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
On the women's side, the Bears ranked 14th in the nation after the fall semester with a 3.47 GPA. The University of North Texas led the way with a 3.62 GPA, while the University of Alabama (3.57) and Gardner-Webb University (3.55) rounded out the top three. Brown was the top-ranked Ivy League program. The Bears boasted an improved GPA of 3.51 in the spring, earning them a 15th-place ranking, a dramatic improvement from their 60th place finish last spring. East Carolina University (3.62), North Texas (3.62) and Illinois State University (3.61) took the top three spots, while Dartmouth just edged Brown for Ivy League honors, ranking 10th with a 3.53 GPA.
The men also had a strong academic year, compiling a 3.24 GPA in the fall to rank 19th in the nation. Yale earned the top spot with a 3.57 GPA, while Ivy League competitors Harvard (3.48) and Dartmouth (3.38) rounded out the top three. The Bears took a huge leap forward in the spring however, improving their GPA to 3.37 and finishing as the seventh best team in the country, an improvement from last spring's 11th-place ranking. Yale took the top spot once again with a 3.57 GPA, while Eastern Illinois University (3.47) and Harvard (3.46) were second and third. Brown was the fourth Ivy League school to rank in the top ten academically.
