PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – The Brown women's swimming and diving team (6-4, 2-4 Ivy League) suffered a narrow, 153-147 loss to the Big Red of Cornell (2-6, 1-6 Ivy League) this afternoon in an Ivy League meet held at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. Prior to the start of the team's last home competition of the season, the Bears took the time to honor the contributions and accomplishments of Perry Ashenfelter (Needham, MA), Meghan Earley (Orange, CT), Julia Guimond (Barrington, NH), Kristin Jackson (Falmouth, ME) and Elizabeth Matthews (Makawao, HI), the five members of the class of 2013.
Brown opened the afternoon's action with a second place finish, as the squad of Catherine Pittman (Williamsburg, VA), Jackson, Emma Lamothe (Brimfield, MA) and Reia Tong (Bethesda, MD) combined for a time of 1:44.79, just six one-hundredths behind Cornell's top 200 medley relay team. Junior Ellen Downing (Denver, CO) turned in a third place performance in the next event, clocking a time of 10:32.79 in the 1000 freestyle, and Kate Dillione (Newtown, PA) earned the Bears' first win of the day, taking the top spot in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:50.30.
The Bears grabbed a third place finish in the 100 backstroke, as Paige Gilley (Cupertino, CA) raced to a time of 57.90, and Briana Borgolini (Ballston Spa, NY) swam to second place in the 100 breaststroke, stopping the clock at 1:03.51. Gina Matsumoto (Farmington Hills, MI) grabbed Brown's second title of the day in the 200 butterfly, cruising to a time of 2:02.51, and leading a Bruno sweep of the event, as Leigh Holmes (Alma, MI) snuck into the second spot with a 2:04.91. Tong continued the Bears' winning streak, stopping the clock at 23.22 to earn a victory in the 50 freestyle. She was followed by Dillione, who finished third in the event with a time of 23.57.
Action on the boards commenced with the 1-meter event, and freshman Rachel Speakman (Hudson, OH) was Brown's top finisher, compiling a score of 244.50 to grab second place. Sophomore Amanda Molinelli (Greenwich, CT) took third for the Bears on the lower board with a score of 235.50. Junior Meghan Wenzel (Indianapolis, IN) took runner-up honors on the 3-meter, finishing with a score of 230.10, while sophomore Michelle Miller (Kenilworth, IL) earned the third spot with a 227.48.
Tong won an incredibly close race in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall at 50.92, just nine one-hundredths ahead of Dillione who took the second spot. Earley and Alexis Daswick (Scottsdale, AZ) finished first and third respectively in the 200 backstroke, turning in times of 2:04.10 and 2:06.79, while Borgolini swam to a third place finish in the 200 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 2:18.64.
Matsumoto earned another victory in the 100 butterfly, gliding into first with a season-best time of 56.25, while Holmes raced to a time of 56.62, good for third place. Jackson also took third in the final individual event of the night, swimming a time of 2:08.16 in the 200 IM.
Brown ended the day with a win in the 400 freestyle relay, as the team of Gilley, Dillione, Ellen Sellinger (Shorewood, WI) and Tong combined for a time of 3:27.48.
Brown concludes its dual meet season next weekend when the team travels to New Haven, Connecticut for an Ivy League meet against the Yale Bulldogs. Swimming and diving are set to begin at 1:00pm.
