Brown Swimming & Diving Takes on FAU & Penn

N. Miami, Fla. – The Brown men's & women's swimming & diving teams have been in N. Miami, Fla., since Monday for winter training, but took a break on Wednesday to compete against Ivy League-rival Penn and FAU in dual meets. Brown won several events with all three schools competing together, but were edged by both FAU and Penn.

The Brown women nearly topped FAU, but fell just short, 141-139, while the Brown men fell to the Owls, 160-113. Against the Quakers, Brown fell 177-104 and 174-107, men and women respectively. 

Senior Allyson Schumacher (Des Moines, Wash.) placed third overall in the 200-yard freestyle with at time of 1:57.86. The mark was just .02 seconds behind the second-place finisher from FAU, Jonna Nyback.

Junior Kristin Jackson (Falmouth, Maine) also had a third-place finish, hers' coming in the 100 breaststroke. Jackson finished in 1:07.37, just a second behind FAU's Eszter Bucz. Jackson took third in the 200 breast as well, with a 2:25.55 mark.

The Bears earned two of the top three spots in the 50 free as sophomore Emma Lamothe (Brimfield, Mass.) and sophomore Megan Nolet (Saratoga, Calif.) took second and third, respectively. All top-three swimmers posted times of sub 25.7, with Lamothe being edged by FAU's Frida Nilsson by . 09 seconds at 25.20. Nolet touched the wall at 25.68.

In the 100 fly, freshman Kate Dillione (Newton, Pa.) came in second overall with a time of 59.23. The rookie was able to hold off FAU's Nilsson, who finished in third, .10 seconds behind her.

Brown captured the one-meter diving title as senior Rebecca Tassell (Jupiter, Fla.) posted a high score of 237.15. Freshman Amanda Molinelli (Greenwich, Conn.) finished second with a mark of 222.20.

The Bears' 200 free relay teams impressed, taking both first and third in the event. The team of Lamothe, Kristen Caldarella (Orwigsburg, Pa.), Paige Gilley (Cupertino, Calif.) and Jackson placed first with a time of 1:39.48. The squad of Schumacher, Elli Sellinger (Shorewood, Wis.), Justine Maher (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Dillione took third at 1:40.48, in a hotly-contested race.

Senior captain James Hunter (Canfield, Ohio) took the title in the 200 free, outracing Penn's Scott Konner. Hunter finished with a time of 1:45.04, more than a full second ahead of Konner. Hunter also showed his speed in the 100 free, finishing first with a time of 47.38.

The Bears boasted two top-three finishers in the 200 butterfly as sophomore Tommy Glenn (Haddonfield, N.J.) and freshman Adam Voss (Muncie, Ind.) took second and third, respectively. It was a close race between Glenn and FAU's Mikolaj Czarnecki, as both posted sub 1:53 times. Glenn finished in 1:52.08, 1.4 seconds behind Czarnecki. Voss took third with a time of 2:01.59.

Freshman Colin Duffy (Toluca Lake, Calif.) added a bronze performance in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:15.54.

Glenn was impressive in the 500 free, taking first overall at 4:44.98, holding off FAU's Stephen Carroll, who took second at 4:46.02. Glenn also boasted a silver in the 100 fly, finishing in 51.01, nearly catching first-place finisher Czarnecki.

Senior Jon Feldman (Avon, Conn.) finished third overall in the one-meter diving, posting a mark of 261.35, just 5.1 points behind FAU's Nick Delong.

Brown's 200 free relay team placed third overall as the team of Hunter, Jeffrey Strausser (Lafayette, Calif.), Glenn and Oliver Diamond (Salt Lake City, Utah) finished with a time of 1:26.01, less than a second behind Penn for first.

The Bears will continue their winter training down in Florida until the 11th when they come back to College Hill. Their next meet will take place on Saturday, January 14 when the women take on Harvard. The men square off against the Crimson on Thursday, January 19.
