Rosenthal Wins Battle, But Bears Fall To Princeton, 8-1

Dec. 8, 2004

Providence, RI - The Brown women's squash team fell to Princeton, 8-1, on December 4, but went down fighting. The highlight of the match for Brown came at the #1 position where tri-captain, All-American Lillian Rosenthal '05, overcame a two-game deficit to beat Princeton's First Team American Claire Rein-Weston 3-2 in a tie-breaker.

The #3 ranked Tiger squad proved too strong in depth for the Bears - but what an awesome match on the #1 court for the Bears from Rosenthal. The match was played in a supremely competitive manner, but with the highest standards of sportsmanship from both players. There were only 3 lets in the entire 1 hour 20 minute match - squash as it should be played. Both players - supremely fit - ran themselves to a standstill in the fifth.

In the first three games, Rosenthal fell behind 5 or 6 points, and finally won the third game in a tie-breaker. Rosenthal was in control of the fourth and indeed had 5 match balls from 8-4 up in the fifth when she had fight off a wonderful comeback by the Princeton competitor. Lillian dug deep, and with both players physically struggling, managed to out-will her opponent to win, 3-2. The crowd stood as one to acclaim the win and appreciate the athleticism displayed by both players.
