Broadbent Family Head Coaching Chair for Squash Racquets

Head Coach Stuart leGassick is a native of Aberdeen, Scotland. He originally came to Brown as the first coach for the Men's Varsity team, starting the program in 1989, and assumed dual duties as Head Coach of the Men's and Women's teams in 1990.

While at Brown, leGassick has raised the performance and expectations of both teams. He has led the women's team to the top echelon of women's squash in the United Sates. In 1996, leGassick's women's team finished 3rd in the Howe Cup, the National Team Championship for the Women's Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Association. In 1997 and 2001, leGassick's women's team won the Clarence C. Chaffee Award at the Howe Cup for its demonstrated qualities of competitiveness and court demeanor. His men's team has progressed steadily to compete in the Top 10 of the United States Intercollegiate Rankings, and have on four occasions won the Hoehn Cup (1999, 2000, 2003 and 2005).

He has successfully coached and developed four-time first team All-American Devon Kennedy, who won the Betty Richey Award as the nation's outstanding squash senior and reached the final of the Intercollegiate Individuals in 1999. Devon was also voted the Brown University Student Athlete of the Year in 1999. Stuart has also coached numerous All Americans, All Ivy and Scholar Athletes. Stuart played a major role in the conversion of the Kate Brodsky Squash Pavilion from hardball to international softball courts in fundraising, planning and in supervising the construction of the courts.

Active in national and international squash, leGassick was instrumental in bringing the United States Open Squash Championship to Brown in 1994 and 1995, which was won by Peter Nicol (1994) of Scotland and Jansher Khan of Pakistan (1995). leGassick, 49, learned his squash in the 1960's in England at one of Britain's premier squash prep schools. Captain of squash for three years at the College of Ripon and York St. John, and semifinalist ('83) and quarterfinalist ('81 and '82) in the British Colleges Squash Championship, leGassick possesses an Honours Degree in Human Movement Studies, Sport and Recreation Management. leGassick came to the United States with the highly sought-after British Squash Racquets Association Coaching Certificate.

Prior to his arrival at Brown, leGassick worked at the Heights Casino in Brooklyn, New York. In 1986-87, the Casino produced seven No. 1 nationally ranked U.S. Junior players and each year produces 50 or more nationally ranked junior players. Stuart is presently a Level II USSRA Technical Coach. Presently le Gassick is serving as President of the Women's College Squash Association.

leGassick, who resides on the East Side of Providence with his wife, Loren, and their children, Alexander "Sandy," Anne, Philip, and Peter. He has instructed at the Junior National Squash Training Center, and is a member of the Professional Squash Racquets Association. He is also involved in the United States Olympic Coaches Training Program and conducts several junior clinics and camps at Brown and in Scotland.

Christopher Sachvie joins the squash coaching staff after a distinguished playing career at Cornell and with some outstanding coaching credentials.

A 2010 graduate of Cornell with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, Sachvie was a three-time All-American, a two-time All-Ivy selection and a three-year captain of the Big Red.

He worked as an assistant coach at St. Lawrence from 2010-2012, where he earned a Master’s of Education, specializing in Leadership.

As a junior, he was a member of Canadian Jr. National Squad, and US Open B19 Champion. He finished in the top 16 in the 2011 Canadian Men's Nationals. 

Sachvie was the Battle of the Border Team Ontario Jr. Coach from 2010 to 2012.  He has also been teaching squash at White Oaks Fitness and Racquet Club since 2008.
