Bears Split with Tigers; Rally in Seventh to Win Second Game 5-4
BEARS SPLIT WITH TIGERS; RALLY IN SEVENTH TO WIN SECOND GAME 5-4
PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown softball team dropped a 5-2 decision to the Princeton Tigers on Saturday afternoon in the first game of a double header, before coming back in the seventh inning to win the second contest by a score of 5-4. The Bears improve to 5-25 overall, 3-5 in the Ivy League, while the Tigers improve to 12-11 overall, 3-5 in the Ivy League. Princeton scored four runs in the first two innings of the first game to take a quick lead. Jen Neil (Kitchener, ONT) had a single in the second and a stolen base, and was driven home when Lori Volker (San Diego, CA) smacked a triple to right field. Volker then scored the fourth run when Lauren Poniatowski (Haddon Heights, NJ) hit a sacrifice fly to left field. The Tigers got their fifth when Kim Veenstra (Hawthorne, NJ) hit a solo homerun in the fifth inning. Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) and Blair Smith (Independence, MO) each had a double for the Bears; Durlesser drove in a run in the third and Smith scored in the seventh. Durlesser picked up the loss on the mound as well, while Sarah Jane White (Winter Park, FL) earned the 5-2 win for the Tigers. In the second contest, strong hitting from a number of players was the key to the Bears’ come-back victory. After leading the game 3-1 for much of the time, Brown fell behind 4-3 when Princeton scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Bears were determined to win, though; the first batter up in the bottom of the seventh, Megan Nicolay (Center Sandwich, NH), hit a triple to right field to start off the rally. Angie Galt (Silver Spring, MD) then came in to pinch hit and got on first base with a single. Laura Leonetti (Fresno, TX) stepped up to the plate and hit a single down the right field line, driving in the tying run. With the bases loaded and one out, Durlesser came up to bat and nailed a long single to left field, driving in the winning run to give Brown a 5-4 victory. Aleana Sutton (West Hartford, CT) earned the win on the mound, while White was the losing pitcher for the Tigers. The Bears have their next doubleheader this Wednesday, April 18, when they take on the Yale bulldogs at home.
