BEARS SPLIT DECISIONS WITH PENN QUAKERS, 5-0 AND 3-2
The Brown softball team picked up a 5-0 win over Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon before falling to the Quakers 3-2 in the second contest after 11 innings. The Bears are now 4-24 overall, 2-4 in the Ivy League, while Penn is 11-20 overall, 1-5 in the league. Sophomore Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) carried the Bears to victory in the first game of the doubleheader, pitching a phenomenal three-hitter on the mound and batting a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Melissa Brown (Moreno Valley, CA) was also a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs, while Cara Howe (Missouri City, TX) hit 1-for-3 with a two-RBI triple. Overall, the Bears out-hit the Quakers 11-3 to pick up their second Ivy win of the season. In the second contest, Penn was up 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. A triple by Laura Leonetti (Fresno, TX) and a sacrifice fly by Lauren Wong (Mountain View, CA) tied the game up, only to be followed by five scoreless innings. In the top of the 11th, Penn’s Veronica Richardson (East Islip, NY) hit a two-out double to put the winning run on second base. Danielle Landolt (Trenton, MI) stepped to the plate and hit a single to center field, good enough to drive in the eventual winning run. Both Clarisa Apostol (Cherry Hill, NJ) and Crista Farrell (Burlington, NJ) went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Pennsylvania offense, while Leonetti and Katie Tone (North Reading, MA) each hit 2-for-4 for the Bears. Becky Ranta (Greenwich, CT) picked up her sixth win of the season on the mound. The Bears will face the Princeton Tigers tomorrow, April 14, in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
