Softball Closes Out 2003 Season With 8-5 Loss To Princeton In Continued Game
May 3, 2003
Providence, RI - The Brown softball team closed out its season on Saturday May 3 as the Princeton Tigers captured sole possession of the Ivy League Softball Title with an 8-5 victory over the Bears in the continuation of a previously halted game from April 14. The game was originally called due to darkness in the top of the ninth inning with Princeton up 8-5. The Tigers traveled back up to Brown to complete the game today, since it was needed to determine whether or not Princeton would win the title or share it with Cornell.
The Bears kept it exciting, as they got the go ahead run at the plate, loading the bases with one out. The rally started when junior Laura Leonetti reached on an error. Freshman Jaimie Wirkowski and senior Lauren Wong followed up with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Brown failed to get a run across the plate as the Tigers took the victory, 8-5.
Brown finishes the season with a 16-23 overall and 5-9 Ivy League record. Leonetti led the team in batting with a .339 average and 41 hits. Wirkowski finished her rookie campaign with 24 RBI, tops on the team. She was second on the team in batting with a .317 average. Sophomore Uchenna Omokaro led the team with 25 runs scored while junior Melissa Brown had a team-high ten doubles on the year. Omokaro led the pitching staff with a 2.27 ERA and 7-8 record.
