The Brown softball team dropped its last doubleheader of the season on Thursday afternoon, falling to the 22nd-ranked UMass Minutewomen by scores of 6-3 and 9-0. The Bears finish their 2001 season with a 7-38-1 overall record, while UMass improves to 36-11.
Brown scored all three of its runs in the second inning of the first contest, after Laura Leonetti (Fresno, TX) drove in two with a hit to left field and pitcher Kaila Holtz (Duxbury, MA) hit a batter with the bases loaded to walk in the third run. UMass rallied in the fourth and scored all six of its runs on five hits, while the Bears committed three errors in the inning. Debbie Tomoguchi (Irvine, CA) led the Minutewomen at the plate, batting 2-for-3 with a two-RBI double and one run scored. Blair Smith (Independence, MO) led the Bears and also went 2-for-3 at the plate. Holtz earned the victory on the mound, giving up zero earned runs and four hits. Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) pitched a complete game for the Bears, allowing four earned runs on six hits in the 6-3 loss.
UMass pitcher Carrie Jeffries (Placentia, CA) threw a one-hitter in the second contest to backstop the Minutewomen to a 9-0 victory in five innings. Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, AZ) and Anna Perey (Chino Valley, AZ) each went 2-for-3 at the plate, combining for three runs and two RBI, while Cherra Wheeler (Kingsburg, CA) was 1-for-2 with a three-run homerun. Teri Rooney (Visalia, CA) also had a great day at the plate, going 1-for-1 with a two-run homerun. Ellie Blake (Downers Grove, IL) was tagged with the loss for the Bears, giving up six earned runs on six hits in less than two innings pitched. Aleana Sutton (West Hartford, CT) came in for relief in the second inning.
