Softball Splits with Yale in Doubleheader
April 29, 2007
New Haven, CT - The Brown softball team (9-32, 2-18 Ivy) split with the Yale Bulldogs (21-21, 6-14 Ivy) in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Bears defeated the Bulldogs 4-0 in the first, but dropped the second, 8-0.
In the victory, freshman pitcher Jessica Iwasaki (Cupertino, CA) pitched a complete game, and allowed Yale just six hits as she struck out three of the 26 batters she faced. Brown got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, when freshman Whitney Lewis (Irvine, CA) reached first on a fielder's choice and junior Amy Baxter (Hollister, CA) doubled to left center to chase in a run for Brown.
The Bears got hot in the fifth, scoring three runs to take a 4-0 lead. Freshman Brittany Lavine (Peoria, AZ) started off the inning with a single to center field, and then stole second base. Freshman Andrea Browne (Vineland, NJ) singled to short, but Brown picked up its second out. But the team rallied, as sophomore Kelsey Wilson (Monterey, CA) singled to right center to bring home both Browne and Lavine. Freshman Amanda Asay (Prince George, BC) followed up with a double that brought in Wilson to put the score at 4-0 and eventually win the ballgame.
The second game of the doubleheader didn't go as well for the Bears, as they lost 8-0 to the hot-hitting Bulldogs. Yale jumped out to a quick lead, scoring one run in the first, three in the second, two in the fourth and one in each of the fifth and sixth.
Yale out-hit Brown 10-6, as the Bears tallied three errors in the loss. Sophomore Kristen Schindler (Caldwell, NJ) received the loss at the mound, losing to Yale 8-0.
The Bears will host Providence College on Tuesday, May 1 for a doubleheader which will wrap up the 2007 season for the Bears.
