Providence, RI - The softball team closed out the 2006 season with a doubleheader sweep over Yale, defeating the Bulldogs 6-2 and 3-0. Freshman Michelle Moses pitched the shut out win in game two allowing three hits and fanning nine batters in her eighth win of the year.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early one run lead in game one, bringing in the lead-off walk in the first inning. The Bears came charging back in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs on three hits. Junior Melissa Ota hit a lead off single through the left side and made her way to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Linnea Anderson. Freshman Kari Best brought in Ota on a single up the middle for the 1-1 tie. Best later stole second and senior Rachel Fleitell hit a double to left center to bring in Best and gave Brown the 2-1 edge. With a gusty wind moving from left field to right field, the Bears were able to capitalize on an error by the Bulldog's left fielder for their third run of the afternoon. Senior Mary Seid hit a high fly ball to the left side of the outfield, where it was dropped by the Bulldog's player and Fleitell was able to score from second, padding Brown's lead 3-1.
The Bears tacked on another run in the following inning as senior Jaimie Wirkowski lead off with a double and was brought in two batters later by Ota who also smashed a double to right center, putting the score at 4-1. In the bottom of the fifth inning the Bears once again made Yale pay for a two out error as Wirkowski hit a routine ground ball to the Bulldog's short stop, but was safe at first after the low throw was dropped by the first baseman, bringing Fletiell from third and building Brown's lead to four runs.
The two squads exchanged runs in the sixth, as Fletiell came in for her third score in the game and giving Brown back the four run edge. Freshman Kelsey Wilson recorded the win for the Bears pitching the complete game victory and allowing two runs on eights hits, striking out three. Wilson finished the season with a 4-1 record.
In game two the pitchers controlled the first half of the game allowing no hits in the first three and a half innings of play. Freshman Michelle Moses cruised through the second and third innings retiring all six batters in order, including striking out all three in the third.
The Bears final broke the scoreless contest in the bottom of the third, rallying with two down to bring in two runs for an early 2-0 lead. Sophomore Amy Baxter drew a two out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch putting a runner in scoring position for Wirkowski. Wirkowski singled to left field, bringing in Baxter and made her way to second on the throw home. One batter later the Bears brought in their second run of the game, when Wilson tagged the ball to center field, bringing in Wirkowski and padding the Brown lead to two.
The Bears pushed their lead to three runs in the fifth as Fleitell hit a lead-off single through the left side and made her way around the bases and scored later on a Yale error to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.
That was all Moses needed as the right handed hurler threw a complete shutout victory, for her eighth win of the season.
The Bears closed out the year 20-25 overall and 6-6 in the Ivy League. Shortly before this afternoon's game the Bears honored the four graduating seniors, Rachel Fleitell, Mary Seid, Sarah Wilson and Jaimie Wirkowski, for four years of dedication and commitment to Brown Softball.
