Bears Win One Against Yale Bulldogs on Saturday
April 26, 2008
Providence, RI - The Brown softball team (8-24, 3-15) defeated the Yale Bulldogs (18-24-1, 5-13 Ivy) 2-1 in game one, but fell 6-3 in game two at the Erickson Athletic Complex this afternoon. The softball team said farewell to its two seniors, Amy Baxter (Hollister, CA) and Linnea Anderson (El Dorado Hills, CA), who played in their final home games of the 2008 campaign.
Brown's Michelle Moses (Cooper City, FL) and Yale's KR Ling pitched great games for their teams during the first contest, as both the Bears and Bulldogs were held scoreless for four innings. But Yale lit up the scoreboard first, tallying a run in the fifth inning when Sloan singled to center field to bring in Courtney Blachford, who tripled down the right field line.
Bruno rallied in the sixth, with freshman Lindsay Rice (Bradford, RI) starting off the offense with a walk. Baxter advanced Rice to second with a single to left field, and junior Kelsey Wilson (Monterey, CA) arrived on first after an error by Yale's shortstop. Anderson then sent a single to left field to bring in Bruno's first run, to tie the game, 1-1.
Yale's Deanne DiBernardi came in at the mound for relief, but she couldn't stop Bruno from scoring another run. With two outs, freshman Emily Chaddock (Laguna Niguel, CA) came in to pinch hitfor Kristie Chin (Katy, TX) and reached first on a fielders choice. Bruno's runner was out at third base, but Baxter reached home to put the score at 2-1 heading into the seventh.
The Bears' kept the Bulldogs scoreless in the seventh, picking up their third Ivy League win of the season. Moses pitched all seven innings, allowing six hits and allowing just one run. She struck out five batters, as she improved her record to 6-12 on the season. Yale's Ling was handed the loss, giving up two runs and allowing four hits in five innings to put her record at 3-7 on the season.
In game two, Brown tallied a run in the first inning when Wilson singled to right field with two outs to score Baxter who singled to center. A scoreless second inning led to the Bulldogs scoring two in the third off Chaddock who was at the mound for the Bears. Aracelis Torres doubled to left center for two RBIs, scoring Katie Yanagisawa and And Ashley Sloan.
With a 2-1 lead, Yale increased it by three more runs in the fifth. With runners on first and second and no outs, Chin came in to relieve Chaddock at the mound. Unfortunately, Holly Gutterud doubled to center field to score the first, and two more runs scored on an error by Brown's short stop.
Down 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Brown scored back-to-back runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Freshman Maria Macrina (Sherrill, NY) scored in the fifth after an error on Yale's left fielder, and sophomore Andrea Browne (Vineland, NJ) smashed a ball way over the right fielder's head and over the fence to score in the sixth. But that was as close as Bruno would come, as Yale tallied another run in the seventh to end the game, 6-3.
Brown will now travel to New Haven to play two more games against the Bulldogs beginning at 12:30 p.m. After Yale, the Bears will head to Providence College on Tuesday, April 29th for their final game of the 2008 season.
