The Rhode Island Rams swept the Brown softball team in a doubleheader in Kingston, RI on Wednesday night, by scores of 11-3 and 10-4. The Bears fall to 7-33 on the season while the Rams improve to an even 23-23.
Rhode Island exploded for 16 hits in the first contest, as four different players picked up two or more at the plate. Cristine Tindall and Andrea Smith led the offensive brigade by batting 3-for-4 and combining for three runs and two RBI. The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Lauren Wong (Mountain View, CA) nailed a two-run single, but the Rams answered with eight runs on nine hits in the bottom of the fourth. Brown scored one in the sixth inning with singles from Julia Iudicello (McLean, VA) and Laura Leonetti (Fresno, TX), but Rhode Island picked up three more in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game by the eight-run rule. Freshman Lee Anne Stanovich picked up the win for Rhode Island, allowing one run on two hits in three innings of relief, while Ellie Blake (Downers Grove, IL) picked up the loss, after allowing eight runs on twelve hits in four innings.
The Rams started early in the second game, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run homerun by Gwen Rack, her eighth of the season. Rhode Island then scored seven runs in the third inning with the help of a grand slam from freshman Nicki Logan. The Bears rallied for three runs in the fifth, as Katie Tone (North Reading, MA) and Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) each picked up a single, but the deficit was too large to overcome. Both teams scored one more in the sixth inning to end the game at 10-4. Rack earned the win for Rhode Island, and Aleana Sutton (West Hartford, CT) picked up the loss for Brown.
