The Brown softball team split a doubleheader with Dartmouth on Saturday, April 24. The Bears dropped game one 3-0, but came back to defeat the Big Green 7-2 in game two. The Bears are now 13-18 overall and 6-4 in the Ivy Leauge.
In game one, the Big Green jumped on top early with a solo homerun over the left field fence in the second. Dartmouth added two insurance runs in the sixth to take a 3-0 lead they would not relinquish.
Junior Marissa Berkes led the Bears with a 2-3 performance in the game.
Berkes suffered the loss on the mound, giving up three runs on four hits and striking out five.
In game two, Dartmouth knocked in their first run of the game in the first inning to jump out ahead of the Bears 1-0.
However, Brown answered back to score three runs after loading the bases early in the bottom of the inning. Clean-up hitter, sophomore Jaimie Wirkowski, knocked in sophomore Rachel Fleitell who beat out a fielders' choice hit back to the pitcher. With two outs senior Melissa Brown put the Bears ahead, 3-1, after belting a single to right.
The Bears kept their bats going and tacked on one run in the third and one in the fifth to grab a 5-1 advantage over the Big Green.
Dartmouth threatened in the sixth, but Brown's defense held the Big Green to only one run.
Freshman Courtney Jenkins sealed the deal for the Bears in the sixth with a two-run homerun over the right field fence. After out-hitting the Big Green 12-8, Brown clinched the victory, 7-2.
Junior Uchenna Omokaro picked up her third win of the season, going the distance and giving up only two runs on eight hits and striking out eight.
Brown will continue Ivy League action tomorrow when they host Harvard for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
