Softball Earns 4-0 Shutout Over URI After Dropping Game One

Kingston, RI - The Brown softball team bounced back from a 4-1 loss in game one against the University of Rhode Island to earn a 4-0 shutout victory in game two on Wednesday Apr. 23. The Bears are now 14-16 overall on the season.
Sophomore Candace Toth brought in two runs in the fourth inning when she doubled to centerfield to give Brown a 2-0 lead in game two. Sophomore Uchenna Omokaro added an RBI single later in the inning to give the Bears a 3-0 advantage.
Berkes went the distance on the mound, allowing no runs on six hits. She recorded three strikeouts and walked two. The win is her fourth straight, improving her record to 7-7 on the season.
The Bears dropped game one 4-1 as the Rams scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings. Brown scored its lone run in the second on an RBI groundout by Fleitell.
The Bears had just two hits in the game as Rhode Island's Jenna Thurston kept the no-hitter in place until the final inning. Brown rallied for two hits in the final frame but was unable to score.
Senior Lauren Wong and Fleitell recorded the two hits for the Bears. Omokaro suffered the loss on the mound. In 3.2 innings of work, Omokaro gave up one earned run and struck out three. Freshman Marcia Abbott pitched 2.1 innings of relief and allowed no runs on two hits with one strike out and no walks.
