Box Score

Providence, RI - With UConn threatening in the top of the seventh having the tying and go ahead run on first and second with two outs, senior pitcher Uchenna Omokaro (Hercules, CA) froze Connecticut's (14-24, 4-10) batter for the third strike getting her seventh victory of the season, and Brown (10-14-1, 2-6) a 3-2, victory this afternoon at Erickson Athletic Complex. Sophomore Melissa Ota (Irvine, CA) had a fourth inning double which proved to be the game breaker, bringing in two runs and giving the Bears a 3-0 lead after four.

Brown jumped out to an early one run lead in the second inning, when pinch runner freshman Meghan Andrews (Longmeadow, MA) tagged up on an Omokaro sacrifice fly to right field getting the Bears on the board. Sophomore Courtney Jenkins (Piedmont, CA) had a lead off single to center field to get the Bears going in the second inning. Next batter freshman Amy Baxter (Hollister, CA) moved Jenkins to second on a single to center field giving the Bears runners on first and second with no one out. Ota had a sacrifice bunt to put Jenkins and Baxter in striking distance for Brown. Andrews came in to pinch run for Jenkins with one out and runners on second and third. Andrews came across the plate when Omokaro hit a high fly ball to right field for a one run lead.

The Bears struck again in the bottom of the fourth, getting two runs on Ota's double for a three run lead. Junior Jaimie Wirkowski (Edison, NJ) and Jenkins had back-to-back singles to put two on with no one out. Baxter laid down a bunt, but the Huskies defense hopped on the ball quickly and nabbed Wirkowski at third for the Bears' first out. Ota then came to the plate and smashed the ball to centerfield, having it roll to the fence, bringing in both Jenkins and Baxter for the three run lead.

UConn cut the deficit to one run, scoring two runs in the fifth inning and threatened in the seventh with the tying and go ahead run on with two outs. Omokaro took over from there striking out the Husky batter and ended the threat for the 3-2 victory. In the win Omokaro went seven innings, with two runs scored on nine hits, striking out nine.

Brown will return to action Saturday, April 23 when they take on Pennsylvania in an Ivy League doubleheader match-up at Erickson Athletic Complex. Game time set to start at 1:00 PM.
