Kingston, RI - The Bears took a close game one, 1-0, on a RBI double by freshman Kelsey Wilson and completed the sweep with a 7-3, win over the URI Rams in game two. Senior Jaimie Wirkowski hit a fifth inning grand slam that proved to be the difference maker as Brown went up 5-1, before both the Bears and Rams each tacked on two runs in the seventh.
Brown and URI battled all seven innings, but the Bears were able to cash in on a sixth inning double to bring in Wirkowski who drew a walk earlier. Before then freshman Michelle Moses was able to get out of trouble getting Rams players to ground out, pop out strike out with players in scoring position. Moses finished the complete shutout victory fanning nine batter and allowing nine hits.
In game two the Bears tied the score at one in the top of the second, when junior Melissa Ota drew a lead off walk and made her way around the bases, and scored on a wild pitch for a 1-1 tie.
The score remained that way until the fifth when Wirkowski tallied her third homerun of the year building Brown's lead to 5-1. Sophomore Linnea Anderson hit a lead-off single and freshman Ava Amini put two runners on with no outs, making it to first on an error by the third baseman. After URI retired Brown's next two batters, senior Rachel Fleitell loaded the bases after a walk putting Wirkowski at the plate where she hammered the ball over the left field fence.
The Bears went up 7-1, after bringing in two runners in the top of the seventh, on RBI singles from junior Melissa Ota and freshman Kari Best pushing the game out of reach for the Rams. Freshman Kristen Schindler recorded the win on the mound surrendering three runs on four hits.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday, April 22, when they host a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader with Ivy League foe Cornell.
