Softball Splits With Fairfield

April 19, 2005

Box Score

Fairfield, CT - After dropping the first game 2-1, the Bears quickly recovered, coming back and beat the Stags 3-0 in the night cap. The Bears are now 9-14-1 overall and 2-6 in the conference.

The Stags jumped out to a quick 1-0, lead in the bottom of the first inning, when Brown's hurler senior Uchenna Omokaro (Hercules, CA) recorded a bases loaded walk for Fairfield's first run. The Stags added a run in the bottom of the fifth, padding their lead to two runs.

With the Bears down 2-0, going into the sixth inning, Brown looked to get something going with their 2-3-4 batters coming to the plate. Freshman LaQuisha Pierre-Louis (Miramar, FL) hit a lead off single up the middle, and next batter junior Jaimie Wirkowski (Edison, NJ) drew a walk to put runners at first and second with no one out. Sophomore Courtney Jenkins (Piedmont, CA) drilled the ball to deep center field for a RBI double, bringing in Pierre-Louis from second. With runners at the corners with no one out, freshman Amy Baxter (Hollister, CA) hit a pop up foul ball to the first base side, where the Fairfield first baseman made a diving catch for the out. With the first baseman down, Wirkowski tried to score from third to tie the score, but was thrown out at the plate for the second out. That was as close as Brown would get as Omokaro grounded out the first baseman for the third out ending the threat for the Bears.

Omokaro recorded the loss in the circle for the Bears, finishing with five strikeouts and surrendering two runs on seven hits in six innings of play.

With a 0-0 tie going into the sixth inning, the Bears finally were able to put one on the scoreboard, when freshman Meghan Andrews (Longmeadows, MA) was batted in by sophomore Melissa Ota (Irvine, CA). Andrews pinch ran for Jenkins who had a lead off single. Andrews was moved over by Baxter's deep fly to right field, putting Andrews in scoring position for Brown. With two down, Ota ripped a hard ground ball down the left field line, getting Andrews in for the first run of the game.

The Bears tacked on two more runs in the seventh when Jenkins brought in Wirkowski and Pierre-Louis on a double to right field padding the lead to three runs.

Senior Marissa Berkes (El Segundo, CA) recorded the shutout victory pitching seven innings only allowing three hits.

The Bears will return to action Thursday, April 21, when they take on the Connecticut for a non-conference match-up with the Huskies, having the first pitch thrown at 4:00 pm.
