April 19, 2003

Cambridge, MA - The Brown softball team split a doubleheader with Harvard on Saturday Apr. 19 in Cambridge, MA. It was déjà vu for the Bears as they dropped a close 4-3 game in eight innings once again in the first game but rebounded with a 5-1 win in game two. Brown split two with Dartmouth in similar fashion yesterday. The Bears are now 13-15 overall and 4-3 in the Ivy League.

Brown put three runs on the board in the second inning of game one to take a 3-0 lead with RBI singles by sophomore Uchenna Omokaro (Hercules, CA) and freshman Marcia Abbott (La Jolla, CA). Harvard cut the lead to two in the sixth when it scored its first run of the afternoon. The Crimson followed up with two runs in the seventh to tie the game 3-3, forcing extra innings. Harvard loaded the bases in the eighth as Abbott came in to relieve Omokaro on the mound at the start of the inning. The Crimson scored the game-winning run with an RBI hit by Pilar Adams.

In seven innings of work, Omokaro allowed three runs, struck out five and walked none. Abbott recorded the loss. Seven players recorded hits in the loss lead by Omokaro's 2-4 performance.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two, after senior Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) was hit by a pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Lauren Wong (Mountain View, CA). The Bears added to their total in the fifth inning, putting up three runs, including a RBI triple by junior Laura Leonetti (Fresno, TX) to take a 4-0 lead. The triple was Leonetti's second of the weekend and third of the season. Brown closed out its scoring on a RBI single by freshman Jaimie Wirkowski (Edison, NJ) in the seventh inning as the Bears downed Harvard, 5-1.

Sophomore Marissa Berkes (El Segundo, CA) picked up the win on the mound, her second of the weekend. Berkes gave up just one run and walked none in seven innings of work. Offensive highlights for the Bears included Omokaro with another 2-4 outting along with Wirkowski, who also went 2-4 at the plate. Wirkowski added two RBI as well. Leonetti, junior Melissa Brown (Moreno Valley, CA) and freshman Rachel Fleitell (Nutley, NJ) all added a RBI each in the win.
