Brown Softball Sweeps Fairfield in Doubleheader, 1-0; 5-3
April 19, 2002
In the first game, it was Marissa Berkes (El Segundo CA) on the mound, pitching a complete game, and earning her first career shutout. Berkes gave up four hits, zero runs, and struck out 2 batters. It was in the seventh inning when Brown got the sole and would be winning run of the game. Freshman Candace Toth (Woodinville, WA) singled to center field to get it started. Angie Galt (Silver Spring, MD), then singled to left field to advance Toth to second. Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) entered to pinch run for Toth, and Uchenna Omokaro (Hercules), stepped up to the plate. Omokaro would reach second base on a error by the third baseman, allowing Durlesser to score the winning run.
The second game started in Fairfield's advantage, as the Stags took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Karyn Kennedy's RBI single. Brown tied the game in the second, as Erin Durlesser singled home Lauren Wong (Mountain View, CA). Fairfield regained the lead in the fourth, as Kennedy doubled to start the inning, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Keri Giangrande's RBI ground out. Brown tied the game in the sixth inning, as Melissa Brown (Moreno Valley, CA) reached on an error, and came home off Cara Howe's (Missouri City, TX) double to left center field. The two teams remained tied at 2-2, until Brown broke the tie with three runs in the 11th inning. Howe had an RBI with a sacrifice fly and Durlesser added an RBI single. The Stags cut the lead to 5-3 when Laura Sandonato scored on an error. The game ended with runners on second and third, when the ball hit Missy MacDonald on her way to third base. Christy Urban took the loss for Fairfield, striking out seven batters in the game. Junior Erin Durlesser came up big for Brown in the extra innings. The pitcher threw five strikeouts on the day, with three coming in the extra time..
