The Brown softball team swept a doubleheader with the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday, April 18. With the win, the Bears improve to 12-15 on the season and 5-3 in Ivy League play.
In game one, the Bears jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. With two outs, senior Melissa Brown hit a single over the second baseman to set the play for Junior Marissa Berkes. Berkes bunted for a base hit on the next play, scoring Brown all the way from second. The run was enough to clinch the victory for the Bears who shut-out the Quakers in the game.
Berkes earned her fifth win of the season, scattering three hits and striking out five.
Pennsylvania came back in game two taking advantage of a squeeze bunt to take a 1-0 lead over the Bears in the first inning. The Quakers increased their lead to two when they capitalized on a one out walk in the third inning.
Freshman Courtney Jenkins brought the Bears within one in the fourth when she smacked a homerun over the left field fence.
Brown continued to rally and tied the score at two after leading off the fifth with back-to-back singles. Junior Uchenna Omokaro picked up the RBI with a long fly ball to left.
The Bears took the lead in the sixth, 3-2, with Jenkins starting the rally with a two-out single. Brown followed her up smacking a double to left center, scoring the go-ahead run.
However, the Quakers answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead 4-3.
A five-run seventh inning propelled the Bears past the Quakers, 8-4, earning the sweep on the day.
Omokaro earned her second win of the season for the Bears on the mound. She gave up five hits and stuck out five.
Jenkins led the Bears in game two with a 3-4 performance with a homerun and three runs scored.
Brown will continue action on Thursday, April 22 when they travel to Providence College. The double header will begin at 3:00 pm.
