Ithaca, NY - Senior Uchenna Omokaro (Hercules, NY) shut down the Big Red bats pitching a one hit complete game in the 9-1 victory. Offensively the Bears exploded this afternoon, getting 21 total hits in the doubleheader include two long balls in game one, having one come off the bat of sophomore Courtney Jenkins (Piedmont, CA) and the other from junior Jaimie Wirkowski (Edison, NJ). In game two the Bears jumped out to an early two run lead, but the Big Red came back getting the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 3-2 victory. The Bears are 7-12-1 overall and 1-5 in the Ivy League.
In the top of the first in game one Brown jumped out to a three run lead, on three hits including Jenkins' two run shot over the left field wall. Junior Rachel Fleitell (Nutley, NJ) had a lead off single and advanced to second on an error from the left fielder. Wirkowski brought in Feitell on a single to center field for the one run lead. With one out and Wirkowski on second Jenkins hit her two run bomb, giving the Bears a three run lead after one half inning of play. Omokaro retired the first six Big Red batters in order to keep the lead at three runs going into the third.
In the third inning Wirkowski hit a one out home run with the bases empty, pushing Brown's lead to four runs. Jenkins drew a walk and was moved to second on a single by freshman Amy Baxter (Hollister, CA) and then advanced to third on a walk to Omokaro. With bases loaded and one out, sophomore Melissa Ota (Irvine, CA) hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in Jenkins. In the bottom half of the inning Cornell got their first hit off of Omokaro, having the runner score on a sacrifice fly later in the inning. But that would be it for the Big Red as Omokaro retired the next nine batters, striking out two in the win.
The Bears tacked on another run in the fourth and then three more in the top of the seventh to get the 9-1 victory.
In game two, Brown's bats did not falter, tallying ten hits off Cornell's hurler. Fleitell hit a lead off double and Brown's next batter freshman LaQuisha Pierre-Louis (Miramar, FL) got a single on a bunt to move Fleitell to third and put runners at the corners with no one out. Fleitell crossed the plate when Cornell tried to throw out Pierre-Louis stealing second, giving Fleitell enough time to steal home getting Bears on the board. Baxter brought in Pierre-Louis on a RBI single down the right field line, for a 2-0 lead after one.
That would be it for the Bears, having Cornell get a run in both the bottom of the second and third to tie the score, later going up a run in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Marissa Berkes recorded the loss for the Bears giving up three runs, two of which were earned on seven hits in six innings pitched striking out two in the loss.
The Bears will wrap up their Ivy League weekend when they travel to Columbia for a doubleheader match-up tomorrow, Sunday, April 17, having the first pitch thrown at 1:00 PM.
