Bears Downed by Dartmouth in Doubleheader
April 14, 2007
Providence, RI - The Brown softball team (7-23, 1-11 Ivy) dropped two more games to the Dartmouth Big Green (10-21, 6-6 Ivy) on Saturday afternoon. The Bears were defeated 3-2 in the first and then 10-3 in the second.
Despite being down 3-0, with Dartmouth picking up two runs in the second and one in the sixth, Brown was able make a come-back in a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Freshman Amanda Asay (Prince George, BC) started off the inning with a walk. Junior Linnea Anderson (El Dorado Hills, CA) popped out to second, and freshman Katie Rothamel (Brentwood, TN) singled through the left side to advance Asay to second base. Then, freshman Whitney Lewis (Irvine, CA) flied out to left field, which left the Bears with two runners on base and two outs.
Then, freshman Brittany Lavine (Peoria, AZ) reached first on an error by Dartmouth's shortstop, Christy Autin, loading the bases for freshman Andrea Browne (Vineland, NJ). With the pressure on, Browne smacked the ball to left field to bring in both Asay and Lavine, and cut the deficit to 3-2.
With two runners on base with two outs, Dartmouth took out pitcher Stephanie Trudeau (who struck out three Brown batters, allowed five hits and two runs) and replaced her with Angela Megaw. The Bears weren't able to keep the momentum up, as they grounded out to third base to end the game in a 3-2 loss.
Freshman Jessica Iwasaki (Cupertino, CA) pitched a complete game for the Bears, striking out four batters, allowing four hits and three runs. Browne went two-for-three at the plate with two RBIs, and Rothamel went two-for-three with one run.
Dartmouth came out swinging hard, as the Big Green picked up three runs to start game two. Sophomore Michelle Moses (Cooper City, FL) (2-10) started at the mound, striking out two batters, allowing five hits and giving up six runs in three innings, before she was relieved by sophomore Kristen Schindler (Caldwell, NJ) in the third inning. Schindler gave up four runs and allowed five hits in three innings.
After the Big Green picked up three in the first, they went on to score another in the top of the second. The Bears answered back by scoring one run in the second, and was started with an Asay walk. Rothamel then singled to fight field and a single by freshman Whitney Lewis (Irvine, CA) put the Bears on the scoreboard.
Dartmouth picked up two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to put the score at 10-1, but Brown was able to bring in two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on another two-out rally.
Asay walked again to start the inning off, but got out at second on a fielder's choice. The second out was on another fielder's choice, as Anderson came in to pinch hit for sophomore Kelsey Wilson (Monterey, CA). Anderson hit a fly ball to right field, and fortunately tipped off Dartmouth's Sarah Bankoff's glove to score Brown's Lewis. Sophomore Kaitlyn Laabs (Redlands, CA) walked and Browne came through for the Bears once again, hitting a single down the left field line for an RBI to put the score at 10-3 in the sixth and eventually end the game.
Browne went two-for-four with one RBI, and Lewis went two-for-three with one run and one RBI.
Up next, the Bears will travel to Boston College on Thursday, April 19 for a 4 p.m. game and then will take on Harvard on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22 and noon.
