Providence, RI - Dartmouth College (18-14, 9-3 Ivy) strung together two big first innings to help Dartmouth College earn a sweep over the Brown University softball team (10-18, 4-8 Ivy) this afternoon at Sachem Field. The Big Green posted a 5-4 victory over Bruno in game one, and followed it with an 11-2 win in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Big Green got off to a great start, scoring four runs in the first and one in the second off Brown pitcher senior Michelle Moses (Cooper City, FL) to take a 5-0 lead heading into the third inning. Freshman Trish Melvin (Wexford, PA) then came in for relief for Moses midway through the second inning, and shut down the rest of the Big Green batters.
But Brown's Kelsey Wilson (Monterey, CA) singled up the middle to bring in the team's first run, followed by a sacrifice fly by freshman Jackie Giovanniello (Floral Park, NY) to score junior Katie Rothamel (Brentwood, TN) to cut Bruno's deficit to three, 5-2.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, the Bears pulled within one after a two-run sixth inning. Rookie Sandra Mastrangelo (White Plains, NY) started off the inning with a single up the middle, and junior Andrea Browne (Vineland, NJ) singled to the shortstop to score a run. Sophomore Lindsay Rice (Bradford, RI) then hit an RBI single to put the score at 5-4 to end the inning. Devin Lindsay (7-6) earned the win at the mound, giving up two runs on one hit in three innings. Hillary Barker pitched the last four innings giving up two runs on five hits.
Moses received the loss (5-5) for the Bears, giving up five runs on six hits. Melvin pitched five innings and allowed just one hit and struck out two Dartmouth batters. As a team, the Bears tallied just six hits and had just one error.
In game two, the Big Green tallied seven runs in the first inning and went on to score two more in the second to take a 9-0 lead heading into the third inning. Melvin started at the mound for the Bears and pitched 0.2 innings giving up seven runs on seven hits. Junior Jessica Iwasaki (Cupertino, CA) came in for relief to pitch the next 2.1 innings, but went on to allow three more runs as Dartmouth increased its lead to 10-0 in the fourth. Sophomore Emily Chaddock (Laguna Niguel, CA) then entered the game to pitch the final inning, but couldn't stop the aggressive Big Green batters, as she gave up one run to extend Dartmouth's lead to 11-0 at the end of the fourth inning.
The Bears came up with two runs in the fifth after Wilson reached first on a fielder's choice that scored both Mastrangelo and Elaina Atherton (Sammamish, WA). But that was as close as Bruno would come, as the game ended after five innings in Dartmouth's favor, 11-2.
Brown tallied just five hits as a team, as Dartmouth combined for 15. Melvin (2-4) earned the loss at the mound, as Kat Hicks (4-1) received the win. She pitched all five innings allowing just two runs on five hits while also striking out two batters.
The Bears will be back in action this weekend, when it takes on Harvard on both Saturday and Sunday in doubleheaders beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the Erickson Athletic Complex.
