The Brown softball team swept a doubleheader with Columbia in its first Ivy League competition of the season on Friday, April 9. With the win, the Bears improve to 9-12 on the season and 2-0 in Ivy League play.
In game one, the Bears jumped all over the Lions early, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Leadoff batter, Sophomore Rachel Fleitell was put on the bases after being hit by a pitch. After being sacrificed to second on a bunt by junior Uchenna Omokaro, Fleitell put the Bears ahead on a single through the right side by senior Laura Leonetti.
Brown tacked on eight additional runs in the fourth to take a 9-0 advantage over Columbia.
The Bears tough defense shut down the Lions in the fifth, clinching their first Ivy League win of the season.
Junior pitcher, Marissa Berkes, earned the shutout for the Bears giving up only four hits and striking out one.
Leonetti led the Bears' 10 hit attack, going 3-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI.
Game two proved to be a pitchers' duel with both teams in a 0-0 deadlock through eight innings of play. In the bottom of the ninth, the Bears tallied two runs on a one out two-run homerun by freshman Courtney Jenkins to earn the victory.
Junior Uchenna Omokaro earned the win for the Bears, earning the shut-out over the Lions, giving up only five hits in the game.
Brown will be home again on Saturday, April 10, for an Ivy League matchup against the Cornell Big Red. Game time is 12:00 noon.
