New York, NY - The Brown softball team (7-18, 1-5 Ivy) dropped two games to the Columbia Lions (14-16, 4-6) on Saturday afternoon. The Bears lost 6-3 in game one, and fell 5-4 in game two.
During the first game, the Lions came out hot, as they scored two runs in the first inning to get on top of the Bears 2-0. They then went on to score one more in the third, two in the fourth and another in the fifth to bring the score to 6-0 before the Bears could get on the scoreboard.
The Bears were able to pick up a run in the sixth when freshman Andrea Browne (Vineland, NJ) reached first on an error on Columbia's first baseman. Browne stole second, and then reached third when freshman Brittany Lavine (Peoria, AZ) grounded out to first base. Another grounder to Columbia's second baseman by freshman Katie Rothamel (Brentwood, TN) brought in Browne, putting the score at 6-1.
In the seventh, junior catcher Amy Baxter (Hollister, CA) singled to left field and freshman Whitney Lewis (Irvine, CA) homered to left field to bring the score to 6-3. But three consecutive strikeouts ended the game in the Lions' favor.
Sophomore Michelle Moses (Cooper City, FL) was handed the loss (2-8) as she pitched three innings, giving up five hits and five runs. Freshman Jessica Iwasaki (Cupertino, CA) came in to relieve, pitching three innings, allowing four hits and giving up one run.
Game two was much different for the Bears, as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the Lions by the fifth inning. Browne led the Bears' off as she got hit by a pitch, and Lavine advanced Browne over to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Kelsey Wilson (Monterey, CA) singled through the right side and brought in Browne to put the score at 1-0 in the third inning.
In the fifth inning, Brown's offense got hot, scoring three runs. Browne got on base on an error by Columbia's second baseman, and Lavine got to first on catchers interference. Then, Rothamel hit a single to left field, which loaded the bases. Baxter singled to left field, and brought home with Browne and Lavine, putting the score to 3-0. Then a single by freshman Whitney Lewis (Irvine, CA) to left field brought in Baxter, putting the Bears ahead, 4-0.
Unfortunately, Columbia scored five runs in the sixth inning, and went on to keep Brown scoreless in the seventh, to win the game 5-4. Iwasaki pitched five innings striking out four batters, allowing seven hits and three runs. Sophomore Kristen Schindler (Caldwell, NJ)(2-4) got the loss after pitching one inning and giving up two runs.
