April 7, 2005
New Britain, CT - Sophomores Melissa Ota (Irvine, CA) and Courtney Jenkins (Piedmont, CA) led the Bears (4-7-1) to a 4-2 victory over the Central Connecticut Blue Devils in game two of the doubleheader this afternoon in New Britian, CT. Ota hit a solo shot over the left field wall in the fourth inning of game two to put the Bears ahead 4-2, and later in the sixth inning doubled down the left field line. Jenkins also did her part, going 3-3 with two RBIs in the 4-2 victory. Brown took game one from Central Connecticut getting five runs in the fourth inning for the 5-4 victory. Freshman Natalie Hewitt (Richmond, TX) went 3-4, with two RBIs to help life the Bears over the Blue Devils.
After surrendering two unearned runs in the first and second inning, the Bears found themselves down 4-0 going into fourth frame. In that inning the Brown offense exploded, getting five runs on four hits for the 5-4 lead. Freshman Amy Baxter (Hollister, CA) got the Bears started with a one out double and was moved over to third on a single from classmate Linnea Anderson (El Dorado Hills, CA). Ota brought in Baxter on a fielder's choice for Brown's first run. On back to back singles by junior Rachel Fleitell (Nutley, NJ) and Hewitt the Bears were able to bring in four runners for the 5-4 lead. That would be all senior pitcher Uchenna Omokaro (Hercules, CA) would need holding the Blue Devils to four runs on seven hits, one walk and five strikeouts in her fourth win in six appearances.
In game two the Bears jumped out to an early two run lead on a Hewitt single bringing in Fleitell, and was later brought in by Jenkins for the 2-0, lead after one. Brown tacked on another run in the third, when Jenkins hit in her second RBI of the game, brining in Fleitell who had a lead off single and stole second to put herself in scoring position for the Bears. Brown built a four run lead in the fourth when Ota hit a solo shot over the left field wall, having the score 4-0, with the Blue Devils on their last nine outs.
Central Connecticut mustered up two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but that would be it as senior Marissa Berkes (El Segundo, CA) recorded her first win of the season, giving up two runs on nine hits, fanning six batters in the 4-2 victory.
The Bears open up their Ivy League season this weekend as they travel to Harvard to take on the Crimson for a doubleheader series, Saturday, April 9, at 1:00 PM.
