Softball Goes 1-1 At Coastal Carolina

Conway, SC - The Brown softball team ended its spring break trip with a 1-1 split at Coastal Carolina on Friday Mar. 28. The Bears took game one 7-4 but the Chanticleers edged out Brown 3-2 in game two. Brown is now 6-11 overall.
Three singles by sophomore Uchenna Omokaro (Hercules, CA), junior Laura Leonetti (Fresno, TX) and sophomore Marissa Berkes (El Segundo, CA) along with two stolen bases and an error by Coastal's defense, allowed the Bears to take a 3-0 lead in the opening frame.
Brown added three more runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Berkes, senior Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) and junior Melissa Brown (Moreno Valley, CA) recorded base hits in the inning. Coastal Carolina scored two runs in the fifth but it wasn't enough as the Bears added one more run in the seventh to take a 7-3 lead.
The Chanticleers had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and one out but Omakaro retired the next two batters to earn the win, her fourth of the season.
Berkes finished the game a perfect 3-3 at the plate with one run and an RBI. Brown added two hits and an RBI for the Bears. Omokaro went 1-4 with two runs and a stolen base while Leonetti also went 1-4 with a run and a stolen base. Freshman Mary Seid (Spring Valley, CA) contributed an RBI double as well.
In game two, freshman Jaimie Wirkowski (Edison, NJ) recorded a lead-off double down the leftfield line in the fourth inning. Coastal's Brittany Nelson gave up two walks and shortstop Kelli Julg recorded an error in the inning as the Bears were able to take advantage, scoring two unearned runs to take the lead 2-0.
Coastal's Holly Lee homered in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to one. A triple in the bottom of the fifth knotted the game 2-2 as Sara Hostetler sent Amanda DeGrendele home for the Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina scored the game-winning run in the seventh and final inning to take the win 3-2.
Berkes recorded the loss on the mound for Brown, striking out five and giving up six hits in six and two-thirds of work.
Brown continues action on Wednesday April 2 for its home-opener against Sacred Heart at 2 p.m.
