Babson Park, FL - The Brown softball team (5-6) ended its Spring Break trip sweeping Webber-International (13-12, 2-4 FSC) on Tuesday afternoon. Bruno earned a 4-2 victory over the Warriors in game one, and then came from behind to pick up a 6-4 win in game two.
Bruno started out hot in game one, batting through the order to gain a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Bruno jumped out to a 2-0 lead after junior Kelsey Wilson (Monterey, CA) doubled to bring in freshman Lindsay Rice (Bradford, RI) and junior Amy Baxter (Hollister, CA). Next, senior Linnea Anderson (El Dorado Hills, CA) stepped up to the plate to hit a two-run homer, increasing Brown's lead to 4-0.
It wasn't until the fourth inning that the Warriors would get on the scoreboard, after Sara Harwood went the distance to decrease their deficit to 4-1. Webber-International picked up one more run in the seventh after an RBI single by Harwood, but that was as close as they would come.
Michelle Moses (Cooper City, FL) pitched all seven innings, allowing just two hits, two runs and striking out 12 batters to receive the win. Moses increased her record to 3-2 on the season.
In game two, the Warriors took a 4-0 lead on the Bears, scoring a run in the third inning and three in the fourth. Bruno was able to cut the deficit to 4-2, after freshman Maria Marcrina hit an RBI single to bring home freshman Kristie Chin (Katy, TX), and sophomore Brittany Lavine (Peoria, AZ) singled to score sophomore Andrea Browne (Vineland, NJ).
Bruno suffered three quick outs in the sixth inning, but had a huge rally in the top of the seventh started by a double to right field by Anderson. Chin was hit by a pitch, and Moses' single advanced Chin to third and scored Anderson to bring the Bears within one.
A fly ball to the outfield by freshman Maria Macrina (Sherill, NY) scored Chin, who dove head first into home, to tie the game, and Lavine then singled to bring home Moses to take the lead.
An error on the Warrior's shortstop then allowed Lavine to cross the plate, putting the score at 6-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Webber-International was able to get one runner on base, but they would get no closer as Bruno secured the sweep winning 6-4.
Emily Chaddock (Laguna Niguel, CA) started at the mound for Bruno, pitching four innings to give up four runs and seven hits. Moses (4-2)stepped in for relief to receive the win, as she struck out two batters and did not allow any hits or runs in three innings.
The Bears open up their Ivy League season this weekend, as they head to Columbia on Saturday and Penn on Sunday for double headers beginning at 12:30 p.m.
