Brown Softball Team Defeats Oakland at Lady Bucs College Softball Invitational

Charleston, SC - The Brown softball team opened its 2008 season with one win and two losses in the first day of competition at the Lady Bucs College Softball Invitational in Charleston, South Carolina. The Bears dropped their first game to Charleston Southern, 9-1, followed by an 8-7 loss to Toledo, but rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Oakland Grizzlies.
Brown and Oakland started off slow, as both teams were held scoreless after the first two innings. The Bears' were sparked senior catcher Amy Baxter's (Hollister, CA) single to left field, as junior Kelsey Wilson (Monterey, CA) got to first on a single up the middle. After a groundout which advanced the runners, freshman Lindsay Rice (Bradford, RI) came up big for Bruno hitting a single to left field to score Baxter. Sophomore Amanda Asay (Prince George, BC) hit a single, scoring Wilson and putting the Bears ahead, 2-0.
The Grizzlies were able to pick up a run in the bottom of the third inning as Alyssa Deacon hit a single and got home after a double by Julie Owen.
In the fourth, Brown picked up a run after Baxter doubled to right center and Wilson reached first on an error scoring Baxter. But Oakland came right back scoring two in the fourth, after a double by Alex Perrino hit Katie Dreyer home to tie the game, 3-3. Oakland picked up a run in the fifth, but the Bears were able to score two in the sixth to give themselves a 5-4 lead and win the game.
The sixth inning was started off with a single by Andrea Browne (Vineland, NJ), as Baxter followed it up with a walk. Wilson put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, and Linnea Anderson (El Dorado Hills, CA) scored Browne after a single. Freshman Kristie Chin (Katy, TX) hit the go-ahead run.
Brown out-hit Oakland, tallying 12 hits to Oakland's 10. Freshman Kristie Chin started at the mound for Bruno, pitching 4.2 innings. Chin gave up 10 hits, four runs and struck out four batters. Junior Michelle Moses (Cooper City, FL) came in for relief, striking out four and walking one in 2.1 innings.
Against Charleston Southern (6-8), Bruno was defeated 9-1, and tallied just three hits to Charleston Southern's 14. Browne, who went one-for-three for the game, scored Bruno's only run. Wilson went one-for-two from the plate, and Anderson went one-for-two. Sophomore Jessica Iwasaki (Cupertino, CA) started at the mound, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing 14 hits, nine runs, and struck out two batters. Moses came in for relief, striking out one batter.
The Bears scored five runs in the first three innings against Toledo, scoring in the first and third innings, but fell 8-7 to the Rockets.
Baxter started off the scoring by hitting a homerun to left center in the bottom of the first inning. In the third, Baxter got on base after being hit by a pitch, as Wilson followed with a single up the middle. Asay singled to center field, and Chin was hit by a pitch to score Bruno's second run. Rice singled to bring in two more runs, and Chin stole home to score the fourth run of the inning.
The Rockets answered back, scoring eight runs in the next four innings. The Bears were able to score two, but ended the game losing 8-7.
Moses pitched 5.1 innings for the Bears, allowing eight hits and giving up four runs. She struck out four batters and walked just one. Freshman Emily Chaddock came in to pitch 1.2 innings, giving up four runs and walked one batter.
