RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Brown University softball defeated Saint Mary's College, 5-3, and fell to Stony Brook University, 5-1, in its second day of competition at UC Riverside's Highlander Classic on Saturday at Harrison Field.
The Bears (3-5) broke a 2-2 tie on the way to their win over the Gaels (4-15) before dropping the decision to the Seawolves (4-4) in their second game of the day.
In the game one win over St. Mary's, junior Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) threw a complete game in the circle and went 2-for-4 at the plate while junior Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) posted a 3-for-4 effort with three RBIs and a triple.
Next, Brown concludes play at the Highlander Classic tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 4, against UC Riverside at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Game 1: Brown 5, St. Mary's 3
Junior Meghan Wimmer threw a complete game in the circle and posted two hits at the plate, junior Annie Scarangella went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Brown bested St. Mary's, 5-3, in its first game of the day on Saturday morning.
In their second game at the Highlander Classic, the Bears turned a 2-2 tie into a 5-2 lead with a run in the third and two runs in the fourth to upend the Gaels.
Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) posted a triple as part of her 3-for-4 effort while Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a run. Sophomore Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) notched a 2-for-4 game with two runs.
In the circle, Wimmer tossed a complete-game 7.0 innings, permitting three runs, all earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts in the win (2-1).
For St. Mary's, Eryn McCoy went 2-for-3 with a home run. She took the loss in the circle, tossing 3.2 innings of relief and conceding five runs, all earned, on eight hits with one strikeout.
After the Gaels took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Brown responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to pull ahead 2-1. Scarangella brought home a run with a single to left center before freshman Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) registered a sacrifice fly to left field.
St. Mary's tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the second before Brown went ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from junior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.).
Scarangella extended the Bears' advantage to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run triple. Brown held St. Mary's to one run in the top of the sixth to secure the win.
Game 2: Stony Brook 5, Brown 1
Junior Meghan Wimmer hit an RBI double, but Brown fell to Stony Brook, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon in its second game of the day and third contest at the tournament.
The Bears pulled within 3-1 in the bottom of the third before the Seawolves added one run in each of the fourth and seventh innings to take the decision. Brown and Stony Brook split the series in the tournament as the Bears topped the Seawolves on Friday, 10-2, in six innings.
In the circle, senior Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) pitched 4.1 innings in relief, giving up just two runs on six hits with a strikeout. Sophomore Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) took the loss (0-1), giving up three runs on five hits in 2.1 innings in the start.
Riley Craig led Stony Brook with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate, tallying a pair of doubles and an RBI. Melissa Rahrich earned the win, hurling a complete-game 7.0 innings and allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
After two scoreless innings, Stony Brook struck for three runs in the top of the third, including an RBI double for Craig.
Brown pulled within 3-1 in the bottom of the third as Wimmer registered a double that brought home Schmitz.
The Seawolves tacked on a run in the top of the fourth and one more in the top of the seventh as insurance.
