Lotz Homers as Softball Powers Past Stony Brook in Six Innings, 10-2

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Junior Meghan Wimmer went 3-for-3 with a triple, junior Ashli Lotz hit a two-run home run, and Brown University softball powered past Stony Brook University in six innings, 10-2, on Friday afternoon at UC Riverside's Harrison Field.

In their first game at the Highlander Classic, the Bears (2-4) took an 8-1 lead through five innings and featured six hitters with at least one RBI on their way to the win over the Seawolves (3-4).

As part of her 3-for-3 effort, Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) posted a triple, two runs, and an RBI while Lotz (Austin, Texas) finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a homer, and two runs. Lotz hit her first career home run after missing almost all of the 2017 season due to injury.

Senior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) notched a 2-for-4 effort with two RBIs and a run, freshman Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) hit a two-run double, and junior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) scored two runs.

Senior pitcher Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) threw 5.0 innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on six hits with two strikeouts in the win (1-3). Freshman Grace Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) did not allow a hit in 1.0 inning of relief.

For Stony Brook, Allysa Malony went 2-for-3 with a double and a run. Taylor Pechin took the loss, conceding six runs, four earned, on six hits with one strikeout over 3.1 innings.

Brown staked itself to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as McGregor opened the scoring with an RBI single to center field. Cranford followed with a two-run double to plate McGregor and Wimmer.

After the Seawolves scored once in the bottom of the second, the Bears responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to pull ahead 6-1. Wimmer and McGregor each brought home a run with a single in the frame.

In the away half of the fifth, Lotz pushed Brown's advantage to 8-1 with her two-run homer to right center. The Bears scored twice in the top of the sixth behind RBI singles from sophomore Raquel Blanchard (Valencia, Calif.) and Lotz prior to holding the Seawolves to one run in the bottom of the stanza.

Next, Brown continues play at the Highlander Classic tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 3, with games against St. Mary's (12:00 p.m. ET) and Stony Brook (2:30 p.m. ET) before concluding the tournament on Sunday, Mar. 4 against UC Riverside (2:30 p.m. ET).
