BOCA RATON, Fla. – Brown softball fell to LIU Brooklyn, 8-0, in five innings and dropped a 13-2 decision in five innings to Fordham University in a pair of contests at the Florida Atlantic University Tournament on Saturday at FAU Stadium.
The Bears (0-9) fell to the Blackbirds (12-10) in their first game of the day before falling in their nightcap to the Rams (18-5) with the mercy rule coming into play in both games.
Freshman Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored between the two contests.
Next, Brown concludes play at the FAU Tournament tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 12, with a game against Rutgers at 9:00 a.m.
Game 1: LIU Brooklyn 8, Brown 0 (5 Innings)
Junior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) went 2-for-2, but Brown fell to LIU Brooklyn, 8-0, in five innings in its first game of the day at the FAU Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Blackbirds scored three times in the fourth, twice in the first, twice in the third, and once in the second on the way to the win.
Sophomore Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) tossed 2.0 innings in the loss (0-4), allowing five runs on eight hits with one strike out. Junior Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) struck out one in 2.0 innings of relief and gave up three unearned runs.
Erynn Sobieski threw a shutout, permitting no runs on five hits over 5.0 innings. Angie Vazquez hit a home run and drove in three runs and, Angie Rizzi went 2-for-2 with three runs scored.
Vazquez hit a two-run homer in the first to give LIU a 2-0 lead. The Blackbirds went up 3-0 in the second and moved ahead 5-0 in the third. LIU brought home three runs in the last of the fourth before closing out the run-rule win.
Game 2: Fordham 13, Brown 2 (5 Innings)
Okimoto posted a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with a double, RBI, and run scored, but Brown dropped a 13-2 decision to Fordham in five innings in its second game of the day on Saturday night.
The Bears rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Rams scored eight runs in the fourth, three in the second, and two in the third.
Andrews, Venegas, seniors Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) and Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.), sophomore Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.), and sophomore Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) notched one hit apiece. Andrews, Schoenewald, and Scarangella all logged doubles.
In the circle, freshman Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) took the loss (0-2), allowing five runs on four hits over 2.2 innings.
Fordham's Taylor Stocks earned the win, tossing a complete game 5.0 innings and permitting two runs, one earned, on eight hits.
For the Rams, Jessica Hughes went 3-for-4 with a home run, triple, five RBIs, and two runs scored. Amy Van Hoven finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Lauren Quense went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs, and two walks.
In the last of the fifth, Okimoto hit an RBI double to right center field to score Andrews. Okimoto later came home on a wild pitch for the Bears' second run.
Hughes hit a three-run homer in the top of the second, and Quense hit a two-run double in the top of the third to give Fordham a 5-0 lead.
The Rams tallied eight runs in the away half of the fourth in an inning that included an RBI triple for Hughes.
