BOCA RATON, Fla. – Brown University softball fell to Ball State University, 8-0, in five innings and to Florida Atlantic University, 7-0, in its first day of competition at the Florida Atlantic University Tournament on Friday at FAU Stadium.
Playing their first games since Feb. 26, the Bears dropped decisions to a pair of clubs that have each played 23 or more games in the Cardinals (10-15) and the host Owls (14-9).
Next, Brown continues play at the FAU Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 11, with games against LIU Brooklyn at 3:45 p.m. and Fordham at 6:00 p.m.
Game 1: Ball State 8, Brown 0 (5 Innings)
Ball State scored three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the third inning to defeat Brown, 8-0, in five innings in the Bears' first game at the Florida Atlantic University Tournament on Friday.
The Cardinals scored at least one run in each inning on their way to the win.
Junior pitcher Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) made the start, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing four runs in the loss (0-3). In relief, senior Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) struck out two batters over 1.1 innings.
Ball State pitcher Carolyn WIlmes (5-3) threw a complete game and struck out eight in the shutout.
Brittany Hopper drove in three runs on 2-of-2 hitting while Rachel Houck and Kennedy Wynn each went 2-for-4.
The Cardinals scored a run on a single in the first and went ahead 2-0 in the second after a wild pitch. Ball State forced home a pair of runs in the third on walks to go ahead 4-0.
Hopper hit a two-run single in the fourth while a walk sent another run home in the frame, making it 7-0. A double to center from Wynn ended the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Game 2: Florida Atlantic 7, Brown 0
Okimoto posted two hits, but Brown fell to Florida Atlantic, 7-0, in its second game of the day on Friday afternoon.
The Owls scored twice in the second, three times in the fourth, and twice in the sixth to take the victory.
In the circle, sophomore pitcher Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) tossed 4.0 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits with a strikeout in the loss (0-3). Freshman Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) pitched 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with a strikeout.
Mia Olson led the Owls, hurling a complete-game 7.0 innings and striking out six batters. At the plate, she went 2-for-3 with a home run. Emily Lochten registered a 2-for-4 effort with a home run and three RBIs. Alex Miller and Amanda Peck both went 2-for-2.
The Owls scored two runs in the top of the second on a single and a wild pitch before Lochten hit a two-run homer, and Olson added a solo shot to give FAU a 5-0 lead in the top of fourth. The hosts added a pair of runs in the sixth on a throwing error and a sacrifice fly.
