Orona, McGregor Lead Softball Past Bryant in Five Innings, 2-0

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Freshman pitcher Katie Orona threw a complete game with seven strikeouts, and classmate Annie McGregor hit a two-run single in the top of the third as Brown University softball beat Bryant University, 2-0, in a rain-shortened five innings at Conaty Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bears (9-12) won their third game in six days at the Bulldogs' (10-23) Conaty Park after sweeping a doubleheader from Penn at the field on Friday. Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) allowed just two hits over five innings.

Orona (6-4) worked her way out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first inducing a ground ball back to the circle and starting a home to first double play.

The Bears notched the game's only runs in the top of the third as McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit a two-run single just past the shortstop's glove into left field. Junior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) started the inning off with a single up the middle before sophomore Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) advanced her with a sacrifice bunt. After a pair of walks, McGregor drove in two with her two-out hit.

In the bottom of the fourth, Hanna made a diving catch in right center field with one out to help keep the Bulldogs off the board.

Brown loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch, but the Bulldogs escaped the inning without permitting a run.

In the last of the fifth, Orona again maneuvered out of a bases loaded situation, recording a strikeout for the contest's final out after retiring the first two batters in the frame.

Logan Paul (2-3) took the loss for the Bulldogs, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with one strikeout.

Next, Brown hosts Harvard for a four-game series from Friday to Saturday starting with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 12:30 p.m.
