Softball Swept by Yale, 10-1 and 11-2
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Kelsey Williams (Greenwood, Ind.) homered to cap her final at bat on College Hill but Yale served the Brown softball team a pair of five-inning losses, 10-1 and 11-2, in Ivy League action on Friday.
Brown's four seniors were honored during Senior Day pregame ceremonies: Jen Kries (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Danielle Palms (Smithfield, R.I.), Kristin Watterlond (East Granby, Conn.) and Williams.
The Bulldogs swung hot bats all day and posted a seven-run inning in each game to sweep the twinbill. In the circle for Yale, Lindsay Efflandt went 5.0 innings in game one and allowed no earned runs or walks, while Chelsey Dunham got the victory in the nightcap in 4.1 innings of four-hit, two-run softball.
Junior Trista Chavez (San Pedro, Calif.) went 1-3 with a double and an RBI in the opener while freshman Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) was saddled with the loss in 4.0 innings of work. In game two, freshman Casey Fisher (Oro Valley, Ariz.) went 1-for-2 and drew a bases loaded walk. Williams clubbed a solo shot to lead off a two-run fifth for the Bears and freshman Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) took the loss in the circle over 3.1 innings.
Brown took an early lead on an RBI double by Chavez in the bottom of the first, scoring sophomore Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) who had ripped a one-out infield single. Yale then unloaded for seven runs in the top of third, five of which were unearned after a misplayed foul ball led to a walk to load the bases. Sarah Onorato responded with a grand slam to put the Bulldogs ahead 6-1 and Carolyn McGuire made it back-to-back jacks with a solo shot to left.
McGuire added a two-run single in the fifth and a wild pitch made it 10-1, but Fisher's leadoff single would be Brown's only hit in the home half as the game was called after five frames.
In game two, the Bulldogs jumped ahead 3-0 after the top of the first on three hits, including Hannah Brennan's two-run bomb. Fisher poked a leadoff single for Brown in the first but the Bears would not register another hit until Williams' dinger in the fifth.
Along the way, Yale scored on a Rachel Paris double to right center in the fourth before the visitors posted a seven-spot in the fifth, striking for seven hits and taking advantage of a Brown error on the infield. Onorato ripped an RBI single, McGuire brought home a pair with a base hit and a sac fly made it 7-0. Consecutive full-count bases loaded singles made it an 11-0 game, facing Brown with its final at bats needing to score three times to keep the game alive.
Williams rose to the occasion and sent a 1-1 pitch over the wall. A walk, a single and a groundout made it second and third with one down, setting the stage for sophomore Jamie Pospishil (Wayne, N.J.) to place an infield hit. Fisher drew the bases-loaded free pass to force in a run but a fielder's choice and flyout to center ended the contest.
Brown wraps up the regular season tomorrow with a rematch against the Bulldogs in New Haven, Conn. The Ivy League doubleheader starts at 12:30 p.m.
