Andrews Lifts Softball to Extra Innings Win over Bucknell after Falling to UNC Greensborough

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Freshman Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) homered and ripped the game-winning RBI base hit to cap a 3-for-7 day and lift the Brown softball team (1-3) to a 10-9 extra-inning win over Bucknell after falling to UNC Greensboro, 4-0, at Boseman Field on Saturday.

Senior Kelsey Williams (Greenwood, Ind.) finished 5-for-6 at the plate with two doubles, a walk and an RBI, including a one-run two-bagger to spark a four-run rally in the top of the sixth inning in the come-from-behind win over the Bison. Freshman Casey Fisher (Oro Valley, Ariz.) batted 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI in the nightcap, Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) belted a two-run home run and sophomore Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) doubled, drove in a pair and scored three times.

Junior pitcher Jessica Cherness (Torrance, Calif.) earned both decisions on the day, suffering the loss in 4.1 innings against UNCG before sealing the win and striking out two in 1.2 innings of redeeming no-hit softball against Bucknell. Freshman Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) came on in relief versus the Spartans and scattered three hits over 1.2 scoreless innings.

The Brown bats faltered against UNCG and managed just two hits through the first five innings, allowing the Spartans to establish a healthy lead with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth. Back-to-back doubles plated two Spartans, while a single and a double stretched the advantage to 4-0. Andrews was stranded after a single in the sixth and Williams rolled an infield single in the seventh, but UNCG held on for the shutout.

In game two, the Bears fell behind 5-1 through three innings but rallied for nine runs over the last five frames, including a pivotal four-run spark in the top of the sixth. A wild pitch put the Bison up 1-0 after one, but Fisher's first-pitch RBI double to left tied the game in the bottom of the third. Bucknell answered with a four-spot in the bottom half, however, as Kristen Zahn turned around a 3-1 pitch and crushed it over the center field wall for a two-run homer. An RBI double down the left field line pushed Bucknell ahead 5-1 after three innings.

The Bears slowly but surely mounted a comeback, beginning with a Williams infield hit that forced a throwing error for an unearned run. Schoenewald cracked a two-run bomb to left in the fifth to make it a 5-3 game, and four key runs in the sixth swapped Brown in front, 7-5. Williams laced a one-out RBI double down the left field line, Leung smoked a two-run two-bagger to left center and Fisher knocked a one-run base hit up the middle to jump ahead of the Bison.

Andrews added an insurance run with a solo homer to left in the seventh, which proved essential in the end as Bucknell erupted for four runs on five hits and an error to tie the game at 9-9 after seven. Cherness kept Brown in the game with her pitching and allowed Andrews to deliver the one-out game-winning RBI single in the top of the eighth.

Brown completes the UNC Wilmington Beach Bash tomorrow when the Bears take on the Seahawks at 11:30 a.m.
