Brown Grabs 8-1 Win Over Yale Before Falling, 5-2, in Second Game of Doubleheader
NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT – The Brown softball team (9-27, 3-15 Ivy League) split a pair of games with Yale (9-35, 4-14 Ivy League) this afternoon on the DeWitt Family Field in New Haven, Connecticut. The Bears triumphed 8-1 in the first game of the day before falling 5-2 in the second contest.
After two scoreless innings, the Bears exploded for four runs in the top of the third, giving them a sizable advantage over the Bulldogs. Junior Kelsey Williams (Greenwood, IN) reached base on a scoring error to start the inning, and then stole second. Senior co-captain Avery Silverstein (Woodbridge, CT) advanced to first on an error by the catcher, allowing Williams to advance to third, and then a sacrifice bunt by senior Aly Caplan (San Mateo, CA) brought her home and put Brown on the board. Freshman Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) followed that up with a triple to right field, bringing in Silverstein and sophomore Emma Blake (Jefferson Township, PA), who was pinch running for Caplan. Not content with a three run lead, senior co-captain Stephanie Thompson (Chino, CA) doubled to center field, bringing Leung home and securing the 4-0 lead.
While Yale would get one back in the bottom of the fifth, the Bears stayed in firm control for the rest of the game, heading into the second contest of the afternoon with an 8-1 win under their belts. In the top of the fifth inning, a double by sophomore Trista Chavez (San Pedro, CA) brought junior Danielle Palms (Smithfield, RI) and Thompson across the plate, and in the top of the sixth Silverstein scored on a single by sophomore Kelsey Hom (Santa Monica, CA). A Leung single brought Hom home and gave Brown its last run of the game and the win.
Leung and Thompson led the way for the Bears once again, going 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively. Leung also contributed three RBIs and a run, while Thompson added one of each.
Sophomore Jessica Cherness (Torrance, CA) pitched the complete game, earning the victory to bring her record to 5-12. She allowed just three hits and one run in the outing, while also striking out four batters.
It was Yale that came out hot in the second game however, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead over Brown. The Bears rallied back in the top of the fourth however, narrowing the gap to two when Chavez hit her seventh home run of the season to drive in two runs.
The Bulldogs added one more run in the bottom of the fourth, and then the teams played three more scoreless innings, as the Bears were unable to come any closer despite a valiant effort in the top of the seventh.
Chavez put forth an impressive showing for Brown in the second game, batting 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Freshman Sarah Ropiak (Acton, MA) received the loss for the Bears, allowing seven hits and four runs in two innings pitched. Senior Lauren Kattchee (Houston, TX) relieved her in the third, giving up five hits and one run in four innings pitched.
Brown and Yale will meet again tomorrow afternoon at 12:30pm on the softball field at the Erickson Athletic Complex. The doubleheader is the Bears' final contest of the 2013 season, and the team will honor its graduating seniors in a brief ceremony before the first pitch.
