Brown Trumped Twice By Dartmouth in Ivy League Doubleheader

HANOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE – The Brown softball team (7-20, 1-9 Ivy League) dropped two games to Dartmouth (16-17, 6-4 Ivy League) this afternoon at the Dartmouth Softball Park. The Bears were defeated, 5-1, in the first game before falling, 10-0, in five innings in the second contest of the day.

During the opening contest, a scoreless first inning gave way to a Big Green surge in the second, as the home team gathered three runs to take the lead. Morgan McCalmon started things off when she walked and then advanced twice on wild pitches. A single by Kathy Dzienkowski brought her home, and Alex St. Romain followed that up with a triple to drive in another run. A sacrifice fly from Brianna Lohmann allowed St. Romain to score and gave Dartmouth a 3-0 lead over Brown.

Both teams scored a run in the fourth, tightening the game as it headed into the final three innings. Freshman
Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) notched a double for the Bears, and then sophomore Trista Chavez (San Pedro, CA) followed that up with a double of her own to drive in the run. McCalmon, the Big Green's first batter of the inning, doubled to left field to get on base and was then driven in by Lohmann to put Dartmouth ahead, 4-1.

Brown was unable to find another run in the game, while Dartmouth cemented its win with a Kristen Rumley home run in the fifth. Sophomore
Jessica Cherness (Torrance, CA) pitched six innings for the Bears, giving up seven hits and five runs in the loss.

The second game of the doubleheader also started with a scoreless first, but after three innings the Big Green had built a 4-0 lead over the Bears. Chavez registered Brown's lone hit in the top of the fourth, breaking up a no-hitter for Dartmouth's Rumley, but the Big Green exploded for six runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 10-0 win over Brown.

Freshman Sarah Ropiak (Acton, MA) pitched the first 3.1 innings for the Bears, allowing nine hits and four runs before Sam Brady (Vienna, VA) relieved her in the top of the fourth. The sophomore gave up three hits and six runs in her appearance.

The Bears and the Big Green will match up again tomorrow afternoon in another Ivy League doubleheader. The first game of the day is set to begin at 12:30pm.
