Brown Splits with Columbia to Earn First Ivy Win of the Season

PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – The Brown softball team (7-14, 1-5 Ivy League) split a pair of games with Columbia (13-15, 2-4 Ivy League) today on the Softball Field at the Erickson Athletic Complex, giving Bears their first league win of the season in their home opener.

"I'm really proud of this team and their resiliency," said first year head coach Katie Flynn. "That was a terrific team effort in game two. We had big RBIs from Trista, Sarah and Danielle, and defensively we were solid, with good relays and communication."

Brown struggled in the opening game of the doubleheader, falling to Columbia by a score of 12-1 in the early afternoon contest. The Lions jumped out to an quick lead, scoring two runs in the first on consecutive singles from Nicole Borchard and Kayla Shimoda, and continued to roll, building a 7-0 lead over the Bears by the middle of the fourth inning.

Brown found its way onto the board in the bottom of the fourth however, as sophomore Trista Chavez (San Pedro, CA) flied out deep into right field, giving senior co-captain Stephanie Thompson (Chino, CA) time to cross the plate and narrow the score to 7-1.

Two scoreless innings brought the teams into the top of the seventh, but Columbia exploded in the final inning, scoring five runs on two singles and a homer to earn the 12-1 win over Brown.

Senior Lauren Kattchee (Houston, TX) received her first loss of the season, pitching 1.1 innings and giving up six hits and five runs. Sophomore Jessica Cherness (Torrance, CA) relieved her in the second and pitched the remainder of the game for the Bears.

Brown bounced back quickly however, dominating the second game of the day to earn a 5-1 victory over Columbia and its first Ivy League win of the season.

The teams played four scoreless innings before a homerun by Columbia's Alyssa Swearingen appeared to give the Lions the advantage. The Bears came roaring back however, scoring all five of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come out on top.

Thompson was the first runner on base, singling to center field just before sophomore Kelsey Hom (Santa Monica, CA) sent one past the shortstop to put a second Bear in position. With two runners on and one out, Chavez sent a blast over the left field wall, bringing both runners in and giving Brown a 3-1 lead over Columbia.

Freshman Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) continued the offensive surge, walking to first and then taking second on a wild pitch. Junior Danielle Palms (Smithfield, RI) doubled to right center to bring Leung in, and freshman Sarah Ropiak (Acton, MA) singled to left field to drive Palms over the plate and secure the win for the Bears.

Chavez was a dominant offensive presence in the victory, going 1-for-3 with a run and three RBIs, while Ropiak cemented the defense, pitching a complete game. The freshman allowed nine hits and just one run, while striking out four batters to earn her fourth win of the season.

The Bears will complete their first Ivy League weekend tomorrow afternoon, welcoming the Penn Quakers to the Softball Field for a doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 12:30pm.
