TOWSON, MARYLAND - The Brown softball team (3-6) ended the weekend on a high note with a 3-2 victory over Morgan State (2-14) during the final day of the Towson Classic.
"We are really pleased with a three and one weekend," said first year head coach Katie Flynn. "Today was a total team win. Jess had a great start and Sarah stepped up with a save. Avery had a top-ten nominee catch, diving back on a ball to save a few runs in the sixth."
Brown started the game on the offensive, scoring an early run in the first inning to take the lead. Freshman Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) led off the Bears with a walk and then stole second base, before sophomore Trista Chavez (San Pedro, CA) singled to shortstop to bring her home.
Morgan State responded with a run in the fourth inning, when Kimberly Fontaine hit a solo homerun to tie the score, but Brown quickly regained the lead in the fifth inning. Senior co-captain Stephanie Thompson (Chino, CA) drew a walk to start the inning, and Chavez put down a sacrifice bunt to move her over. Sophomore Kelsey Hom (Santa Monica, CA) then hit an RBI double to score Brown's second run of the game. Senior Aly Caplan (San Mateo, CA) continued the rally with a single to left field, and junior Jen Kries (Mission Viejo, CA) followed with an RBI double to extend Brown's lead to 3-1. Morgan State tacked on a late run in the bottom of the seventh when Zina Constancia hit a homerun, but Brown easily made the next two outs to end the inning.
Chavez had an excellent performance for the Bears at the plate, going two-for-two with two singles and knocking in a run. Kries and Hom each had an RBI double for the Bears, and Caplan singled as well.
Sophomore Jessica Cherness (Torrance, CA) received her first win for Brown, pitching six innings against Morgan State and allowing just one run on two hits and two walks. Freshman Sarah Ropiak (Acton, MA) relieved Cherness on the mound in the seventh inning, earning her first save when she allowed one run on one hit and struck out two batters.
