Brown Falls to Nebraska Omaha, 13-0

FORT COLLINS, COLORADO - The Brown softball team (0-5) fell by a score of 13-0 to Nebraska Omaha (17-1) in its final game of the Colorado State Classic on Sunday morning.

The Mavericks took the lead in the top of the first inning when Amber Lutmer hit a three-run homerun. They tallied another two runs on an RBI single to center field from Sydney Hames and a sacrifice fly from Mara Eeman. Nebraska Omaha extended their lead in the second inning with a solo homerun from Allie Mathewson. The Bears came close to scoring in the bottom of the second, when sophomore Kelsey Hom (Santa Monica, CA) doubled to left center and advanced to third base on a wild pitch, but unfortunately were unable to get the run.

Nebraska Omaha ran away with the game in the fourth inning when Campbell Ditto hit a two-run double to left field before Molly Negrete hit a grand slam to extend the Mavericks' lead to 12-0.

Senior co-captain Stephanie Thompson (Chino, CA) and sophomore Trista Chavez (San Pedro, CA) both singled in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Bears but were left on base. In the top of fifth, Mathewson hit her second homerun of the game to bring Nebraska Omaha's run tally to thirteen.

The Bears combined for four hits over the course of the game, with both Thompson and Hom going 1-for-2 on the day. Chavez hit a single and walked during her two at-bats, and senior co-captain Avery Silverstein (Woodbridge, CT) singled to right field in the last inning.

Brown used three different pitchers during the game, with freshman Sarah Ropiak (Acton, MA) receiving the loss for the Bears after pitching one inning and giving up five runs on four hits and a walk. Sophomore Jessica Cherness (Torrance, CA) and sophomore Sam Brady (Vienna, VA) each pitched two innings in relief for the Bears.

The Brown softball team will hit the road again next weekend, traveling to Baltimore, Maryland to compete in the three-day Towson Tournament. The Bears will face Towson twice, with one game on Friday, March 8th and one on Saturday, March 9th. They will then play Lafayette on Saturday afternoon and Morgan State on Sunday morning.
